Professor Hwa-Jin Lee's research lab focuses on translational biomedical research spanning regenerative medicine, epigenetics, and neurophysiological regulation. The lab investigates epigenetic mechanisms underlying developmental health outcomes, particularly through DNA methylation analysis in prenatal and perinatal contexts. It also explores non-invasive therapeutic interventions—such as mind-body practices like Tai Chi Qigong and Turo dance—for improving autonomic nervous system balance and quality of life in aging and stress-related conditions. Additionally, the lab develops computational tools for cancer origin prediction using multi-omics data, integrating chromatin architecture with somatic mutation patterns.

Tai Chi Qigong training appears to have beneficial effects in terms of the quality of life and physical functioning of elderly subjects with knee osteoarthritis. However, more rigorous trials are needed to confirm the efficacy of this training for patients with osteoarthritis of the knee.
Nitric oxide (NO) and tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-alpha) are the major mediators produced in activated macrophages which contribute to the circulatory failure associated with septic shock. A sesquiterpene lactone compound (dehydrocostus lactone) isolated from the medicinal plant, Saussurea lappa, inhibited the production of NO in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-activated RAW 264.7 cells by suppressing inducible nitric oxide synthase enzyme expression. This compound also decreased the TNF-alpha lev
We have identified three differentially methylated regions associated with gestational age at birth. All three nearby genes play important roles in the development of several organs, including skeletal muscle, brain and haematopoietic system. Therefore, they may provide initial insight into the basis of PTB's negative health outcomes. The genome-wide custom DNA methylation array technology and novel statistical methods employed in this study could constitute a model for epidemiologic studies of
The combination of riluzole with sorafenib seems potent in suppressing tumor proliferation in vitro and in vivo in GRM1-expressing melanoma cells regardless of B-RAF genotype and may be a viable therapeutic clinical combination.
G-protein-coupled receptors (GPCR) are the largest family of receptors with over 500 members. Evaluation of GPCR gene expression in primary human tumors identified over-expression of GPCR in several tumor types. Analysis of cancer samples in different disease stages also suggests that some GPCR may be involved in early tumor progression and others may play a critical role in tumor invasion and metastasis. Currently, >50% of drug targets to various human diseases are based on GPCR. In this review
Six diarylheptanoids were isolated from the rhizome of Alpinia officinarum (Zingiberaceae) as inhibitors of nitric oxide (NO) production in the lipopolysaccharide-activated macrophage cell line RAW 264.7. A double bond at C-4 of the linker between two aromatic rings was found to be essential for activity. Furthermore, the active diarylheptanoids suppressed expression of the inducible NO synthase protein and mRNA. These results imply that the traditional use of Alpinia officinarum rhizome as anti
Limitation in cell sources for autologous cell therapy has been a recent focus in stem cell therapy and tissue engineering. Among various research advances, direct conversion, or transdifferentiation, is a notable and feasible strategy for the generation and acquirement of wanted cell source. So far, utilizing cell transdifferentiation technology in tissue engineering was mainly restricted at achieving single wanted cell type from diverse cell types with high efficiency. However, regeneration of
Adjustment of Middle-aged People with Hemiplegia after a Stroke Lee, Hwa Jin1)․Yi, Myungsun2) 1) Doctoral Candidate, Graduate School of Seoul National University; Researcher at the College of Nursing, Seoul National University 2) Professor at the College of Nursing, Seoul National University; Researcher, The Research Institute of Nursing Science, Seoul National University Purpose: The purpose of this study was to understand the adjustment process of middle-aged people in Korea with hemiple
Aberrant activation of a Wnt/β-catenin pathway results in nuclear accumulation of β-catenin in colon cancer. Inhibiting β-catenin is one strategy for treating colon cancer. Here, we identified Z-ajoene, a sulfur containing compound isolated from crushed garlic, as an inhibitor of colon cancer cell growth. Z-Ajoene repressed β-catenin response transcriptional activity, intracellular β-catenin levels, and its representative target protein levels (c-Myc and cyclin D1) in SW480 colon cancer cells. T
