Professor Hyeong Gon Yu's research lab specializes in retinal and uveal diseases, with a focus on understanding the underlying pathophysiology of ocular conditions such as retinitis pigmentosa, diabetic retinopathy, pathologic myopia, and uveitis. The lab employs advanced proteomic and immunophenotypic analyses to identify biomarkers and elucidate immune mechanisms driving disease progression, particularly in microvascular and inflammatory eye disorders. A key emphasis is placed on translating molecular findings into clinical insights for improved diagnosis, treatment, and patient outcomes.

To determine whether there are differences in the immunopathogenesis of different endogenous uveitis syndromes, the phenotypic characteristics of immune cells were analysed among patients with endogenous uveitis. After 25-gauge transconjunctival sutureless vitrectomies for proliferative diabetic retinopathy, postoperative hypotony and the need for tamponade increased the rates of immediate and recurrent PVH, respectively. Immediate PVH occurred in 45.2% of the patients but did not affect early visual recovery. A 25-gauge transconjunctival sutureless vitrectomy resulted in a favorable incidence of recurrent PVH (11.8%) during the first 6 months.
The systemic administration of UDCA and TUDCA suppressed laser-induced CNV formation in rats, which might be associated with anti-inflammatory action. The result indicates that UDCA and TUDCA are potential candidate drugs for the treatment of many CNV-related retinal diseases, including age-related macular degeneration.
