Professor Jae Berm Park's research lab specializes in clinical transplantation and hepatobiliary surgery, with a strong focus on improving outcomes in liver and kidney transplantation. Key research directions include optimizing surgical techniques for vascular malformations such as pancreatic arteriovenous malformations (P-AVM), enhancing graft survival through immune modulation strategies like mixed chimerism induction after cord blood and kidney transplantation (CKBMT), and managing viral infections such as parvovirus B19 and hepatitis B in transplant recipients. The lab also investigates innovative approaches to reduce ischemia-reperfusion injury in living donor liver transplantation, including the use of intermittent hepatic inflow occlusion and prophylactic vaccination strategies in high-risk recipients.

In patients with symptomatic P-AVM, surgical resection of the affected pancreas showed a successful result. When a patient is at a high risk for surgical treatment, transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt, transarterial embolization, and radiation therapy might be other treatment options.
Our clinical trial has shown that long-term renal allograft survival without maintenance IS can be achieved by induction of mixed chimerism following CKBMT.
This prospective study was designed to investigate the clinically significant level of parvovirus B19 viral load using quantitative real-time (RT) polymerase-chain reaction (PCR) in kidney transplantation (KT) recipients. One hundred forty-three adult recipients who underwent their first KT between November 2003 and October 2005 were enrolled. Six blood samples (the first taken preoperatively, subsequent samples taken every 4 weeks for 20 weeks) were taken from each patient for parvovirus B19 DN
The principal objective of this study was to evaluate the feasibility of Hepatitis B virus (HBV) vaccine switch program after 1-year Hepatitis B immunoglobulin (HBIG) for the prevention of de novo HBV (DNHBV) infection in pediatric recipients of hepatitis B core antibody (anti-HBc)-positive grafts. In this study, we enrolled pediatric recipients (n = 14), who had undergone living donor liver transplantation with anti-HBc-positive grafts between July 2000 and July 2005 and were followed up for ov
The objective of this study was to compare outcomes between basiliximab and low-dose r-ATG in living donor kidney transplantation recipients with low immunological risk. Patients in the low-dose r-ATG group received 1.5 mg/kg of r-ATG for 3 days (total 4.5 mg/kg). Graft survival, patient survival, acute rejection, <i>de novo</i> donor specific antibody (DSA), estimated glomerular filtration rate (e-GFR) changes, and infection status were compared. Among 268 patients, 37 received r-ATG, and 231 r
Xenotransplantation using pigs' liver offers a potentially alternative method to overcome worldwide donor shortage, or more importantly as a bridge to allotransplantation. However, it has been challenged by profound thrombocytopenia and fatal coagulopathy in non-human primate models. Here we suggest that a left auxiliary technique can be a useful method to achieve extended survival of the xenograft. Fifteen consecutive liver xenotransplants were carried out in a pig-to-cynomolgus model. Right au
Steroids have been a mainstay of immunosuppressive regimens in renal transplantation despite their adverse effects. The introduction of new immunosuppressant has improved the survival rates and prompted trials of steroid withdrawal. We conducted a randomized prospective study to compare steroid withdrawal at 6 months post-transplant between tacrolimus + mycophenolate mofetil (MMF) (FK group) versus cyclosporine A + MMF (CsA group). Steroid was withdrawn at 6 months post-transplant under the cond
All diagnosed cases of BKV nephropathy were in the high BK viremia group. For BK viruria and viremia, early detection of BK infection together with early intervention by reduced immunosuppressant is a useful strategy to maintain allograft function. Long-term follow up is required to identify the risk factors for BK infection and graft survival after kidney transplantation.
LDKT is better than waiting for SPK/DDKT in DMESRD patients, if a living donor is available, and this conclusion may be unique to Korea where waiting time for SPK is long. SPK can be used in non-obese Asians with type 2 as well as type 1 DMESRD.
Our study demonstrates that rare variant profiling of CYP3A5 and CYP3A4, combined with the haplotype structures of CYP3A locus, provide additive value for personalized TAC dosing. We also identified a novel association between CYP1A1 rare variants and TAC PK variability in the CYP3A5 nonexpressers that needs to be further investigated.
We designed this study to define reference values of the cynomolgus monkey coagulation system, as the normal range of values has not been established. Measurement of coagulation function was determined by testing plasma samples from 30 healthy male cynomolgus monkeys. Prothrombin time (PT), PT activity, PT international normalized ratio (INR), activated prothrombin time (aPTT), antithrombin III activity, factor II, V, VII, VIII, IX, X, XI, and XII, protein C activity, protein S activity, and d-d
Thus, our findings propose a biomarker that can distinguish CKBMT patients who achieve transplant tolerance and are eligible for discontinuation of immunosuppressants and may provide insight into tolerance mechanisms in CKBMT.
