Professor Ji Young Cho's research lab specializes in natural product discovery and marine bioprospecting, focusing on the isolation, structural elucidation, and biological evaluation of novel bioactive compounds from marine-derived microorganisms such as actinomycetes and Streptomyces. The lab integrates advanced spectroscopic techniques—including NMR, X-ray crystallography, and MS—along with chemical derivatization and stereochemical analysis (e.g., Mosher’s method) to determine complex molecular structures. Research directions include the biosynthesis of unique ring systems, cytotoxicity screening of peptides and polyketides, and the development of eco-friendly algaecidal agents for controlling harmful algal blooms. The lab also explores the intersection of sensory design and consumer behavior in luxury retail environments, highlighting the symbolic role of aesthetics in brand perception.

A novel meroterpenoid, azamerone, was isolated from the saline culture of a new marine-derived bacterium related to the genus Streptomyces. Azamerone is composed of an unprecedented chloropyranophthalazinone core with a 3-chloro-6-hydroxy-2,2,6-trimethylcyclohexylmethyl side chain. Four new 3-methyl-4-ethylideneproline-containing peptides, lucentamycins A-D (1-4), have been isolated from the fermentation broth of a marine-derived actinomycete identified by phylogenetic methods as Nocardiopsis lucentensis (strain CNR-712). The planar structures of the new compounds were assigned on the basis of 1D and 2D NMR spectroscopic techniques, while the absolute configurations of the amino acid residues were determined by application of the advanced Marfey method. Marine derived actinomycetes constituting 185 strains were screened for their antifouling activity against the marine seaweed, Ulva pertusa, and fouling diatom, Navicula annexa.
