Professor Jong-Hoon Lee's research lab focuses on the intersection of environmental health, neuroinflammation, and clinical oncology. The lab investigates regional air pollution sources and their health impacts, particularly fine particulate matter and its link to neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s, where chronic inflammation in neurons is identified as a central mechanism. Additionally, the lab explores novel therapeutic strategies, including inflammasome inhibition, for preventing inflammatory damage in conditions ranging from viral lung injury to neurodegeneration. The lab also contributes to clinical oncology through outcomes research in stereotactic body radiation therapy for prostate cancer, emphasizing personalized treatment in elderly and comorbid patients.

Two men undergoing transsphenoidal exploration for pituitary adenoma were found to have lymphocytic hypophysitis. Both presented with frontal headaches, lethargy, and diminished libido. This finding means that dementia syndrome is an inflammatory disease. This research suggests that diagnostic criteria for Alzheimer's disease should be based on the presence or absence of inflammation in neurons. Because inflammation in neurons can occur in middle age due to various causes, we can treat inflammation in neurons and prevent and treat dementia syndrome, including Alzheimer's disease.

We evaluated 5-year follow-up of stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT) with Cyberknife for prostate cancer patients. Forty-five men with prostate adenocarcinoma who received SBRT using Cyberknife from May 2006 to November 2012 were enrolled in this study.
