Professor Joonsang Yoo's research lab specializes in cerebrovascular diseases, with a primary focus on acute ischemic stroke management, endovascular reperfusion therapies, and the identification of imaging biomarkers for predicting treatment response and outcomes. The lab investigates the interplay between stroke and systemic conditions such as cancer and coronary artery disease, aiming to improve risk stratification and personalized treatment strategies. Key research directions include the development of advanced imaging techniques—particularly on computed tomography and diffusion-weighted MRI—to assess thrombus characteristics, recanalization potential, and tissue viability after reperfusion therapy.

Background: Atherosclerosis is a systemic disease. Many ischemic stroke patients may have concomitant coronary artery disease (CAD). Detection and treatment of preclinical CAD in stroke patients may improve long-term outcome and survival because CAD is a major cause of death during follow-up in stroke patients. However, association between coronary and cerebral artery atherosclerosis in stroke patients has not fully been investigated. This study aimed at examining the frequenc
Background and Purpose- Several studies have reported partial reversal of diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) lesions after acute stroke reperfusion treatment. However, factors associated with DWI reversal have not yet been systematically investigated. We evaluated the factors associated with DWI reversal after endovascular treatment (EVT). Methods- We retrospectively analyzed consecutively encountered patients with acute ischemic stroke who underwent EVT at 3 comprehensive stroke centers in Korea
Background and Purpose- We investigated whether measuring the volume and density of a thrombus could predict nonrecanalization after intravenous thrombolysis. Methods- This study included a retrospective cohort to develop a computed tomography marker of thrombus for predicting nonrecanalization after intravenous thrombolysis and a prospective multicenter cohort for validation of this marker. The volume and density of thrombus were measured semiautomatically using 3-dimensional software on a base
Background and Purpose- Recent guidelines have suggested the potential benefit of intravenous thrombolysis in stroke patients with systemic malignancy who have a reasonable life expectancy of >6 months. However, it is difficult to determine which patients with cancer will have a life expectancy of >6 months. Therefore, we identified the factors associated with 6-month mortality in patients with acute ischemic stroke and systemic malignancy. Methods- Consecutive stroke patients with systemic mali
First-line SR thrombectomy showed higher immediate reperfusion and less vessel injury for ICAS-related occlusions than CA. However, there was no significant difference in the final reperfusion status or 3-month outcomes from additional rescue treatments.
In the ischemic stroke patients with nonvalvular AF, coexisting SEC was associated with more severe stroke and was predictive of poor long-term functional outcome.
NBTE should be suspected as a potential cause of stroke in patients with metastatic cancer. Patients with NBTE have a high risk of recurrent stroke and mortality. Future studies are necessary to determine strategies to reduce stroke recurrence in patients with NBTE.
We performed pupillometer testing on 132 patients with Parkinson's disease, stratified into two groups according to the disease stage. Neurological examinations and pupillometry were performed in the ON state. Patients in the Hoehn and Yahr stages 1 and 2 comprised the early group, and patients in stages 3-5 formed the late group. We performed age- and sex-matched (2:1) propensity score matching to compensate for the effect of age on pupil light reflex. Eight pupillometer parameters were measure
Acute kidney injury (AKI) is often associated with the use of contrast agents. We evaluated the frequency of AKI, factors associated with AKI after endovascular treatment (EVT), and associations with AKI and clinical outcomes. We retrospectively analyzed consecutively enrolled patients with acute ischemic stroke who underwent EVT at three stroke centers in Korea. We compared the characteristics of patients with and without AKI and independent factors associated with AKI after EVT. We also invest
The comprehensive program for in-hospital stroke that included the use of computerized physician order entry was effective in reducing time intervals to evaluation and reperfusion therapy.
Cerebral thrombi in patients with cancer-associated stroke showed higher proportions of platelets, thrombin, and tissue factors, suggesting their key roles in arterial thrombosis in cancer and providing a therapeutic perspective for preventing stroke in patients with cancer-associated stroke.
In T2D patients with ischemic stroke, lobeglitazone reduced the risk of cardiovascular complications similar to that of pioglitazone without an increased risk of HF. There is a need for further studies on the cardioprotective role of lobeglitazone, a novel thiazolidinedione.
Statin use was associated with a lower risk of cardiovascular events in T1D patients. Further prospective studies are needed to confirm the potential role of statins in prevention of CVD in patients with T1D.
Our findings show that the door-to-needle time was longer in patients with minor stroke than it was in those with non-minor stroke, mainly owing to delayed action in the initial steps of neurology notification and imaging. Our findings suggest that some quality improvement initiatives are necessary for patients with suspected stroke with minor symptoms.
