Professor Junbeom Hur's research lab specializes in cybersecurity and privacy-preserving technologies for emerging computing environments, with a strong focus on attribute-based encryption, access control, and secure data management in cloud computing, smart grids, and mobile networks. The lab investigates advanced cryptographic solutions such as ciphertext-policy attribute-based encryption (CP-ABE) to address critical challenges like fine-grained access control, user and attribute revocation, key escrow, and secure data deduplication in outsourced storage. Research also extends to secure handover protocols in mobile networks and privacy-preserving data sharing in disruption-tolerant and distributed systems. The lab emphasizes practical, scalable, and provably secure mechanisms tailored for real-world deployment in sensitive and dynamic environments.

Some of the most challenging issues in data outsourcing scenario are the enforcement of authorization policies and the support of policy updates. Ciphertext-policy attribute-based encryption is a promising cryptographic solution to these issues for enforcing access control policies defined by a data owner on outsourced data. However, the problem of applying the attribute-based encryption in an outsourced architecture introduces several challenges with regard to the attribute and user revocation.
With the recent adoption and diffusion of the data sharing paradigm in distributed systems such as online social networks or cloud computing, there have been increasing demands and concerns for distributed data security. One of the most challenging issues in data sharing systems is the enforcement of access policies and the support of policies updates. Ciphertext policy attribute-based encryption (CP-ABE) is becoming a promising cryptographic solution to this issue. It enables data owners to def
In cloud storage services, deduplication technology is commonly used to reduce the space and bandwidth requirements of services by eliminating redundant data and storing only a single copy of them. Deduplication is most effective when multiple users outsource the same data to the cloud storage, but it raises issues relating to security and ownership. Proof-of-ownership schemes allow any owner of the same data to prove to the cloud storage server that he owns the data in a robust way. However, ma
Smart grid uses intelligent transmission and distribution networks to deliver electricity. It aims to improve the electric system's reliability, security, and efficiency through two-way communication of consumption data and dynamic optimization of electric-system operations, maintenance, and planning. The smart grid systems use fine-grained power grid measurements to provide increased grid stability and reliability. Key to achieving this is securely sharing the measurements among grid entities o
Mobile nodes in military environments such as a battlefield or a hostile region are likely to suffer from intermittent network connectivity and frequent partitions. Disruption-tolerant network (DTN) technologies are becoming successful solutions that allow wireless devices carried by soldiers to communicate with each other and access the confidential information or command reliably by exploiting external storage nodes. Some of the most challenging issues in this scenario are the enforcement of a
IEEE 802.16e uses EAP-based authentication and key management for link layer security. Due to the lack of ability to support mobility, however, EAP-based key management becomes a principal impediment to the achievement of an efficient and secure handover in IEEE 802.16e mobile WiMAX networks. In this paper, an overview of the EAP-based handover procedures of the latest IEEE 802.16e standard is given and their security flaws are analyzed. Possible solutions for secure handover in IEEE 802.16e net
With the successful proliferation of data outsourcing services, security and privacy issues have drawn significant attention. Data authentication in particular plays an essential role in the storage of outsourced digital content and keeping it safe from modifications by inside or outside adversaries. In this paper, we focus on online data authentication using a Merkle (hash) tree to guarantee data integrity. By conducting in-depth diagnostics of the side channels of the Merkle tree-based approac
With the rapid growth in the development of smart devices equipped with biometric sensors, client identification system using biometric traits are widely adopted across various applications. Among many biometric traits, fingerprint-based identification systems have been extensively studied and deployed. However, to adopt biometric identification systems in practical applications, two main obstacles in terms of efficiency and client privacy must be resolved simultaneously. That is, identification
Mobile health (also written as mHealth) provisions the practice of public health supported by mobile devices. mHealth systems let patients and healthcare providers collect and share sensitive information, such as electronic and personal health records (EHRs) at any time, allowing more rapid convergence to optimal treatment. Key to achieving this is securely sharing data by providing enhanced access control and reliability. Typically, such sharing follows policies that depend on patient and physi
