Professor Jung-Yun Lee's research lab focuses on understanding the molecular mechanisms underlying ovarian cancer pathogenesis, with a particular emphasis on high-grade serous ovarian cancer (HGSC) and rare subtypes such as mucinous and clear cell carcinomas. The lab investigates tumor heterogeneity, metastatic spread via transcoelomic dissemination, and the tumor immune microenvironment, especially T cell exhaustion and immune checkpoint regulation. Their work integrates clinical outcomes with molecular profiling to improve prognostic tools and identify novel immunotherapeutic targets, such as the co-stimulatory receptor 4-1BB. The lab also explores the chemopreventive potential of natural compounds like genistein in ovarian carcinogenesis.

Genistein is known as the major component of isoflavone, which is present in high-soy diets. Genistein has received much attention because of its chemopreventive and therapeutic effects on various types of cancers. Numerous studies have shown that genistein has antineoplastic effects against ovarian cancer. Survival outcomes have improved for serous and endometrioid epithelial ovarian cancer in the last 20 years. However, no improvement was observed for patients with mucinous and clear cell carcinoma subtypes.
Although a high level of intratumor heterogeneity was evident in high-grade serous ovarian cancer, our results suggest that transcoelomic metastasis arises with little accumulation of somatic mutations and copy number alterations in this patient.
