Professor Koichi Murata's research lab focuses on the molecular mechanisms underlying inflammatory and musculoskeletal diseases, particularly rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and osteoarthritis (OA). The lab investigates microRNAs (miRNAs) as key regulators of disease progression and diagnostic biomarkers, exploring their roles in synovial fluid and plasma to differentiate disease phenotypes and assess disease activity. Additionally, the lab examines the impact of therapeutic agents like methotrexate on surgical outcomes and investigates miRNA involvement in tissue repair processes such as fracture healing. The research integrates clinical observations with molecular biology to identify novel therapeutic targets and biomarkers for rheumatic diseases.

Plasma miRNAs had distinct patterns from synovial fluid miRNAs, which appeared to originate from synovial tissue. Plasma miR-132 well differentiated HCs from patients with RA or OA, while synovial fluid miRNAs differentiated RA and OA. Furthermore, plasma miRNAs correlated with the disease activities of RA. Thus, synovial fluid and plasma miRNAs have potential as diagnostic biomarkers for RA and OA and as a tool for the analysis of their pathogenesis.
These results suggest that miR-451 suppresses neutrophil chemotaxis via p38 MAPK and is a potential target in the treatment of RA.

Bone erosions were more frequently found in EORA. Clinical remission at 1 or 2 years was not enough to protect bone erosions in the ACPA-positive EORA patients. Optimal treatment strategies preventing radiological damage should be considered for EORA.
The prevalence of blood parasites was investigated in 701 Japanese wild birds for 13 years from January, 1988 to March, 2001. Most of the injured or sick birds were caught in the suburbs of Kobe City, Hyogo Prefecture and brought to the zoo for clinical care. Among all the birds examined, 10.6% were infected with hematozoa belonging to three genera as Plasmodium (1.7% of the samples), Haemoproteus (5.1% of the samples) and Leucocytozoon (4.6% of the samples), and two birds (0.29% of the samples)
