About the Lab
Professor Kyuhyung Park's research lab specializes in vitreoretinal diseases and ocular microsurgery, with a strong focus on the complications and outcomes of ophthalmic interventions such as facial filler injections and vitrectomy. The lab investigates the pathophysiology of retinal disorders, particularly age-related macular degeneration (AMD), emphasizing oxidative stress, genetic factors like C3 variants, and cellular protective mechanisms involving clusterin and the PI3K/Akt pathway. Advanced imaging techniques such as spectral-domain OCT are employed to study structural and functional correlations in conditions like occult macular dystrophy and retinal layer abnormalities.

15Clinical features of iatrogenic occlusion of the ophthalmic artery and its branches following cosmetic facial filler injections were diverse according to the location and extent of obstruction and the injected filler material. Autologous fat injections were associated with a worse visual prognosis and a higher incidence of combined cerebral infarction. Extreme caution and care should be taken during these injections, and physicians should be aware of a diverse spectrum of complications following
In Brief Purpose: To investigate the incidence and risk factors of sclertomy leakage and postoperative hypotony after 23-gauge transconjunctival sutureless vitrectomy. Methods: This was a retrospective study including 322 eyes of 292 patients who underwent 23-gauge transconjunctival sutureless vitrectomy by a single surgeon with minimum follow-up period of 1 month. The incidence and risk factors of intraoperative suture placement for leaking sclerotomies and postoperative hypotony (≤5 mmHg) were
Purpose.: Oxidative stress to retinal pigment epithelial (RPE) cells is thought to play a critical role in the pathogenesis of age-related macular degeneration (AMD). This study was conducted to investigate whether clusterin protects human RPE cells from ROS-induced apoptosis through a PI3K/Akt survival pathway. Methods.: The preventive effect of clusterin on reactive oxygen species (ROS) production and RPE cell death induced by hydrogen peroxide was determined in ARPE-19 cells. The ability of c
PURPOSE. To investigate morphologic photoreceptor layer abnormalities and their correlation with visual function in occult macular dystrophy (OMD), by using spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT). METHODS. This observational case series included 18 eyes of 9 patients with OMD. All patients underwent an ophthalmic evaluation, which included a fundus examination, fluorescein angiography, full-field electroretinography (ERG), multifocal ERG, time-domain optical coherence tomography (
nsSNPs in C3 increased the risk of developing AMD 1.8-fold for 1 risk allele or 2.4-fold for two risk alleles and were preferentially associated with advanced AMD. Further study is needed to determine whether haplotypes in the 3' end of C3 have an independent association with AMD.
The development of secondary MHs after vitrectomy is rare. Pathogenic mechanisms other than idiopathic MH may be involved in these cases. The anatomical and functional outcome of the secondary MHs that developed after vitrectomy was good, although the final visual acuity was dependent on the underlying ocular pathology.
The present study provides a description of preference weights for VI and various chronic diseases from a national survey. Furthermore, it reveals the distributions of public burden from these conditions, and compared them in this regard. Although details might vary across the populations having different cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds, the results underscore the importance of VI for quality of life and as a public health burden compared with other major chronic diseases.
Only one locus, the ARMS2/HTRA1 was a significant genetic risk factor for Korean exudative AMD, including its subtypes, PCV and typical CNV. Stepwise regression revealed that CFH was important to risk of exudative AMD in general but not to any specific subtype. While increased education was a unique risk factor to PCV when compared to CNV, this association was independent of refractive error in this homogenous population from South Korea. No significant interactions between environmental and gen
Late retinal detachment is the main vision-threatening condition in patients with regressed ROP during childhood. The visual prognoses of these patients are poorer than those with late retinal detachments that occur in adult ROP patients. Therefore, a periodic fundus examination should be performed more frequently during childhood than in adulthood, particularly in nonverbal children.
Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is the leading cause of blindness in developed countries and is characterized by the development of choroidal neovascularization (CNV). Therapies for AMD have focused on suppressing angiogenic factors, such as vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), mainly via conventional anti-VEGF antibody agents. However, additional efforts have been made to develop effective small-interfering RNA (siRNA)-based intracellular therapeutic agents. In this study, we have
Optical coherence tomography angiography enables noninvasive visualization of the laser-induced CNV microvasculature in the rodent retina with high resolution and tissue-lumen contrast, providing quantifiable in vivo measurements for longitudinal analysis.
