Professor Kyung Min Kim's research lab specializes in epidemiological and clinical studies focusing on the interplay between sleep-wake patterns, migraine, and comorbid mental health conditions such as depression, anxiety, and insomnia. The lab conducts population-based surveys to investigate chronotype-related health risks, headache disorders, and the validity of web-based diagnostic tools. A central theme is understanding how circadian rhythms and sleep disturbances contribute to neurological and psychiatric conditions, particularly in the Korean population. The lab also emphasizes methodological innovation in digital health research, including web-based surveys and telemedicine validation.
Figures are computed from collected data and may differ slightly.
Information on sex differences in the association between chronotype and depression is scarce. We aimed to investigate these differences using data from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey in 2016. Chronotypes were categorised based on mid-sleep time on free days corrected by sleep debt accumulated on workdays (MSFsc): early type, < mean MSFsc - 1 standard deviation (SD); intermediate type, between mean MSFsc - 1 SD and MSFsc + 1 SD; and late type, > mean MSFsc + 1 SD. The attack rates were higher than those of the previous outbreaks in other countries. The outbreak spread beyond Pyeongtaek St. Mary's Hospital when four of the patients were moved to other hospitals without appropriate quarantine. The best method of preventing future outbreaks is to overcome the vulnerabilities observed in this outbreak, such as ward crowding, patient migration without appropriate data sharing, and the lack of an initial broad quarantine.
Visual aura (VA) presents in 98% of cases of migraine with aura. However, data on its prevalence and impact in individuals with migraine and probable migraine (PM) are limited. Data from the nation-wide, population-based Circannual Change in Headache and Sleep Study were collected. Participants with VA rating scale scores ≥ 3 were classified as having VA. Of 3,030 participants, 170 (5.6%) and 337 (11.1%) had migraine and PM, respectively; VA prevalence did not differ between these cohorts (29.4%
Migraine prevalence was stable over the 9-year period between the surveys, but disability due to missed activity was greater in 2018 than in 2009 in Korea.
Information technology advances may help in conducting epidemiological studies using web-based surveys. Questionnaire-based headache diagnosis should be validated against the doctor's diagnosis. This study aimed to develop and validate a web-based diagnostic questionnaire for migraine, probable migraine (PM), and tension-type headache (TTH). We constructed a seven-item questionnaire for diagnosing migraine, PM, and TTH. A web-based survey was conducted among adults aged 20-59 years; migraine, PM
Anxiety, depression, and insomnia are highly prevalent among migraineurs and are associated with negative health consequences. Anxiety and depression, however, unlike insomnia, are usually underdiagnosed, due to less self-reporting of these two conditions. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the risk of anxiety and depression in migraineurs with self-reported insomnia, using a general population-based sample. We used data from a nationwide population-based survey on headache and sleep,
Radiomic models using MRI were able to differentiate JME from HCs.
Excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS) is a prevalent sleep-related complaint across the general population and has been reported to be associated with headache. Tension-type headache (TTH) is the most commonly encountered headache and accounts for a significant amount of disease burden. However, the association between EDS and TTH is currently scarce. In the present study, we investigated the impact of EDS on the prevalence and clinical presentation of TTH. We utilized data from the Korean Headache
This study characterizes the distribution of skin disorders in patients admitted to the neurosurgery service based on the consultations that have been made for dermatologic evaluation. Collaboration between the neurosurgeons and dermatologists may improve the quality of patient care and help to better predict the occurrence of these conditions.
This open-label prospective study compared the antiplatelet potency of sarpogrelate, aspirin, and beraprost in 20 healthy volunteers according to in-vitro closure time. Volunteers were assigned to receive sarpogrelate, aspirin, or beraprost for 14 days, then given 14 days of washout, then switched to another of these medications. We measured in-vitro closure time using a platelet function analyzer with collagen/epinephrine (CEPI). We also measured bleeding time, von Willebrand factor (vWF), D-di
Objectives : The purpose of this study was to investigate the use of various treatment modalities including pharmacotherapy, educational-behavioral therapy, and complementary alternative treatment for children with mental retardation (MR) or autism spectrum disorder (ASD) in Korea. Methods : The sample consisted of 50 parents who have children with MR (N=28) or ASD (N=22) : 38 boys, 12 girls ; mean age 14.06 (4.14) years old. A questionnaire was composed of the experienced modality, duration, co
The prevalence of AQP4 antibody was often detected in new-onset optic neuritis patients. In patients with bilateral involvement or poor initial visual acuity, the AQP4 antibody test should be considered.
PURPOSE: Sarcopenia, also known as the age-related loss of muscle mass and muscle fitness, and physical performance, has been related to many adverse health outcomes. Resistance exercise may have an important role in effecting strategy for sarcopenia in aging populations. The purpose of this study is to systematically assess the effects resistance exercise interventions on muscle mass, muscle strength, and physical performance in elderly diagnosed with sarcopenia.METHODS: A comprehensive search
