Professor Min Kyung Chu's research lab specializes in headache disorders, with a focus on the epidemiology, clinical characteristics, and impact of migraine, tension-type headache (TTH), and probable medication-overuse headache (PM) in the Korean population. The lab investigates the interplay between sleep disturbances, psychiatric comorbidities, and headache severity, emphasizing patient-reported outcomes and quality of life. It also develops and validates culturally adapted assessment tools, such as the Korean version of the Headache Impact Test-6 (HIT-6), to improve clinical evaluation and management.
Figures are computed from collected data and may differ slightly.
The prevalence of insufficient sleep was significantly higher among migraineurs compared to that in non-migraine headache or non-headache group.
Background Sleep disturbances are closely related to migraine. Nevertheless, information regarding the impact of short sleep duration and poor sleep quality on the clinical presentation of migraine at population level is limited. Methods This study was a nationwide population-based survey on adults aged 19-69 years. Headache frequency (attacks/month) and intensity (visual analogue scale, 0-10) were documented. Short sleep duration and poor sleep quality were defined as average sleep duration <6
Our findings indicate that insomnia is prevalent among individuals with TTH. Moreover, insomnia was associated with exacerbation of headache symptoms and psychiatric comorbidities. Therefore, identification of insomnia among individuals with TTH is required to improve the management of headache symptoms in such patients.
PM is a prevalent headache disorder in Korea. Some sociodemographic and clinical characteristics of PM are different from those of SM.
Background: Quality-of-life measurement represents an important tool for evaluating the management and impact of headache on individuals and society. The Headache Impact Test-6 (HIT-6) is a simple instrument developed to assess headache-related disability in Western countries. The objective of this study was to determine the reliability and validity of the Korean HIT-6. Methods: Participants were recruited from patients who visited the Neurology Clinic of Hallym University Sacred Heart Hospital
We found that HAMP usually showed stereotyped clinical features including mild intensity, a dull or pressing quality, localisation ipsilateral to the side of MP use, provocation by prolonged MP use and often accompanied by a burning sensation.
The influence of socioeconomic status on migraine and tension-type headache differs by gender, with women being more susceptible to socioeconomic influence.
FM based on 2010 American College of Rheumatology diagnostic criteria was more prevalent among patients with CM than those with CTTH. Some clinical features and comorbidities of CM varied with the presence of FM.
The prevalence of insomnia among subjects with PM was not significantly different compared to those with migraine. Anxiety, depression, headache frequency and headache intensity were related with ISI score in subjects with PM.
Peripheral inflammation disturbance in patients with bvFTD participates in disease-specific pathophysiological mechanisms, which could be a promising target for diagnosis, treatment, and monitoring therapeutic efficacy.
Approximately 20 % of migraineurs had EDS in this population-based sample. Excessive daytime sleepiness was associated with an exacerbation of some migraine symptoms.
