Professor Naoki Yamamoto's research lab specializes in quantum control and estimation, focusing on the design and analysis of feedback strategies to protect and enhance quantum states against decoherence. The lab investigates robust quantum filtering and observer design for linear quantum systems under parametric uncertainties, with applications in quantum networks and quantum memory. A key focus is on developing practical quantum technologies such as quantum state transfer, entanglement preservation, and variational quantum algorithms for quantum chemistry. The lab bridges theoretical quantum control with real-world implementation challenges, including detector noise and hardware limitations in current quantum devices.

In this paper, we consider a linear quantum network composed of two distantly separated cavities that are connected via a one-way optical field. When one of the cavities is damped and the other undamped, the overall cavity state obtains a large amount of entanglement in its quadratures. This entanglement, however, immediately decays and vanishes in a finite time. That is, entanglement sudden death occurs. We show that the direct measurement feedback method proposed by Wiseman can avoid this enta
Quantum chemistry studies of biradical systems are challenging due to the required multiconfigurational nature of the wavefunction. In this work, Variational Quantum Eigensolver (VQE) is used to compute the energy profile for the lithium superoxide dimer rearrangement, involving biradical species, on quantum simulators and devices. Considering that current quantum devices can only handle limited number of qubits, we present guidelines for selecting an appropriate active space to perform computat
In the theory of quantum dynamical filtering, one of the biggest issues is that the underlying system dynamics represented by a quantum stochastic differential equation must be known exactly in order that the corresponding filter provides an optimal performance; however, this assumption is generally unrealistic. Therefore, in this paper, we consider a class of linear quantum systems subjected to time-varying norm-bounded parametric uncertainties and then propose a robust observer such that the v
This paper studies a quantum risk-sensitive estimation problem and investigates robustness properties of the filter. This is a direct extension to the quantum case of analogous classical results. All investigations are based on a discrete approximation model of the quantum system under consideration. This allows us to study the problem in a simple mathematical setting. We close the paper with some examples that demonstrate the robustness of the risk-sensitive estimator.
In this paper, we study a general linear networked system that contains a tunable memory subsystem; that is, it is decoupled from an optical field for state transportation during the storage process, while it couples to the field during the writing or reading process. The input is given by a single photon state or a coherent state in a pulsed light field. We then completely and explicitly characterize the condition required on the pulse shape achieving the perfect state transfer from the light f
Feedback control is expected to considerably protect quantum states against decoherence caused by interaction between the system and environment. Especially, Markovian feedback scheme developed by Wiseman can modify the properties of decoherence and eventually recover the purity of the steady state of the corresponding master equation. This paper provides a condition for which the modified master equation has a pure steady state. By applying this condition to a two-qubit system, we obtain a comp
The variational quantum eigensolver is a hybrid algorithm composed of quantum state driving and classical parameter optimization, for finding the ground state of a given Hamiltonian. The natural gradient method is an optimization method taking into account the geometric structure of the parameter space. Very recently, Stokes et al. developed the general method for employing the natural gradient for the variational quantum eigensolver. This paper gives some simple case-studies of this optimizatio
In this paper, we consider a simplified error-correcting problem: for a fixed encoding process, to find a cascade connected quantum channel such that the worst fidelity between the input and the output becomes maximum. With the use of the one-to-one parametrization of quantum channels, a procedure finding a suboptimal error-correcting channel based on a semidefinite programming is proposed. The effectiveness of our method is verified by an example of the bit-flip channel decoding.
Recently, the complete characterization of a general Gaussian dissipative system having a unique pure steady state was obtained. This result provides a clear guideline for engineering an environment such that the dissipative system has a desired pure steady state such as a cluster state. In this paper, we describe the system in terms of a quantum stochastic differential equation (QSDE) so that the environment channels can be explicitly dealt with. Then, a physical meaning of that characterizatio
This paper provides a general theory for characterizing and constructing a decoherence-free (DF) subsystem for an infinite dimensional linear open quantum system. The main idea is that, based on the Heisenberg picture of the dynamics rather than the commonly-taken Schrödinger picture, the notions of controllability and observability in control theory are employed to characterize a DF subsystem. A particularly useful result is a general if and only if condition for a linear system to have a DF co
We study the preparation of entangled pure Gaussian states via reservoir engineering. In particular, we consider a chain consisting of $(2\\aleph +1)$ quantum harmonic oscillators where the central oscillator of the chain is coupled to a single reservoir. We then completely parametrize the class of $(2\\aleph +1)$ -mode pure Gaussian states that can be prepared by this type of quantum harmonic oscillator chain. This parametrization allows us to determine the steady-state entanglement properties
Abstract In this paper, we propose a quantum amplitude estimation method that uses a modified Grover operator and quadratically improves the estimation accuracy in the ideal case, as in the conventional one using the standard Grover operator. Under the depolarizing noise, the proposed method can outperform the conventional one in the sense that it can in principle achieve the ultimate estimation accuracy characterized by the quantum Fisher information in the limit of a large number of qubits, wh
Feedback control has been used for nearly a century to provide reliable operation of electronic systems. Quantum systems introduce new considerations; in particular, quantum devices intrinsically use very small signals and so are highly sensitive to noise, and they require coherence between an original signal and any controlling input. The author demonstrates an approach that allows minimum-noise amplification even with realistic imperfections, for improved applications in computing, secure comm
