Professor Sang Kun Lee's research lab specializes in epilepsy surgery and autoimmune encephalitis, with a focus on improving diagnostic accuracy and surgical outcomes in epilepsy, particularly in cryptogenic and neocortical epilepsies. The lab investigates prognostic factors, such as age at surgery and hippocampal sclerosis, and evaluates the utility of advanced neurophysiological and serological tools—including ictal EEG, CSF autoantibody testing, and tissue-based assays—for precise localization and early diagnosis. Surgical treatment of cryptogenic neocortical epilepsy is challenging. The aim of this study was to evaluate surgical outcomes and to identify possible prognostic factors including the results of various diagnostic tools. Autoimmune encephalitis is a group of encephalitis syndromes that cause altered mentality, memory decline, or seizures in association with the presence of serum and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) autoantibodies (auto-Abs). Age at surgery and hippocampal sclerosis are independent prognostic factors for ATL in mesial TLE. These findings suggest that mesial TLE may be a progressive disorder, and surgical outcome is better when early ATL is performed.
