Professor Sang Min Lee's research lab specializes in psychological resilience, burnout, and organizational dynamics, with a focus on understanding the factors that influence mental health and well-being in educational, clinical, and organizational settings. The lab conducts large-scale meta-analyses and empirical studies to examine the roles of social support, parental practices, and workplace dynamics in shaping psychological outcomes such as burnout, resilience, and professional performance. Key research directions include the development of psychometric tools like the Counselor Burnout Inventory and the application of organizational theories—such as dynamic capabilities and ambidextrous management—to enhance resilience in supply chains and mental health services. The lab’s work bridges psychology, education, and business strategy to promote sustainable well-being and performance.

This study investigated the relationship between psychological resilience and its relevant variables by using a meta‐analytic method. The results indicated that the largest effect on resilience was found to stem from the protective factors, a medium effect from risk factors, and the smallest effect from demographic factors.
Purpose – Developing ambidexterity as a dynamic capability is important for firms to sustain their competitive advantage. Moreover, this capability allows firms to build the resiliency to mitigate enterprise risks. The purpose of this paper is to apply two main theoretical frames from the strategy literature, dynamic capabilities, and organizational ambidexterity, to supply chain management (SCM) to examine mitigation strategies for supply chain (SC) disruptions. The authors empirically investig
This study is a meta-analysis of 19 relevant studies, with 95,434 participants, investigating the relationships between various types of social support and 3 dimensions of student burnout. The overall results indicate that social support is negatively correlated with student burnout. Specifically, school or teacher supports have the strongest negative relationship to student burnout. Social supports from parents and from peers also have a significant negative relationship with student burnout. A
The study identified distinct patterns of parental practices that differentially influence adolescent behavior using the National Educational Longitudinal Survey (NELS:88) database. Following Brenner and Fox's research model (1999), the cluster analysis was used to classify the four types of parental practices. The clusters of parenting practices in the current study showed convergence with Baumrind's parenting style. The results indicated that these four clusters differentially affected student
This article describes the development and psychometric properties of the Counselor Burnout Inventory (CBI), which is designed to meet the needs of the counseling profession by assessing burnout in counselors. Factor structure, concurrent validity, internal consistency, and test-retest reliability of the CBI scores are reported. Implications for practice are discussed.
The current study identifies and assesses individual and work‐related factors as correlates of burnout among mental health professionals. Results of a meta‐analysis indicate that age and work setting variables are the most significant indicators of emotional exhaustion and depersonalization. In terms of level of personal accomplishment, the age and work hours variables were the most significant indicators with positive correlations. On the basis of these results, the authors seek to determine re
The authors used a cluster analysis procedure and the Counselor Burnout Inventory (S. M. Lee et al., 2007) to identify professional counselors' burnout types. Three clusters were identified: well‐adjusted, persevering, and disconnected counselors. The results also indicated that counselors' job satisfaction and self‐esteem were good discriminators between the 3 clusters. Implications for counselors are discussed.
Abstract The purpose of this study is to identify specific burnout patterns among Korean students. Using a cluster analysis procedure and the Maslach Burnout Inventory–Student Survey, four clusters were identified: (1) distressed group; (2) laissez‐faire group; (3) persevering group; and (4) well‐functioning group. In addition, the results of categorical regression analysis indicated that self‐esteem and Grade Point Average (GPA) were good discriminators between the four clusters. Specifically,
The purpose of this study was to develop a Korean College Stress Inventory (KCSI), which is designed to measure Korean college students' experiences and symptoms of career stress. Even though there have been numerous scales related to career issues, few scales measure the career stress construct and its dimensions. Factor structure, internal consistency, and concurrent validity of the KCSI scores are described. Results indicated that the internal consistency reliabilities of 4 KCSI subscale scor
Korean adolescents experience considerable stress because of an educational system that focuses primarily on college entrance examinations, pressure for academic achievement, and a competitive atmosphere in school. The main purpose of this study was to explore age differences in the construct of Korean adolescents’ academic burnout. Once assumptions of configural, factor loading, and intercept invariance were satisfied, we compared means of latent variables (four components of academic burnout i
The purpose of this study is to investigate whether effective coping strategies play an important role to reduce burnout levels among sexual or substance abuse counselors. The authors examined whether coping strategies mediated or moderated relations between job stress and burnout in a sample of 232 abuse‐specific counselors. Results indicated that self‐distraction and behavior disengagement coping strategies mediated the relationships between 3 job stress variables (workload, role conflict, and
This study was conducted to develop and initially evaluate the psychometric properties of the Planned Happenstance Career Inventory (PHCI), which aims to assess skill in using chance events to develop career opportunities. After item generation and exploratory factor analysis, 130 original items were reduced to 25 items across 5 factors (5 items for each corresponding factor). Multigroup confirmatory factor analysis confirmed the validity of this 5‐factor structure, and the goodness of fit showe
