Professor Se Ik Kim's research lab focuses on advancing ovarian cancer (OC) precision medicine through integrative biomedical research. The lab investigates the impact of genetic factors—such as BRCA1/2 mutations—on prognosis and treatment response in high-grade serous ovarian carcinoma (HGSOC), while also exploring the role of host-related factors like sarcopenia, body composition, and underweight status in survival outcomes. A key direction involves developing non-invasive diagnostic models using metagenomic data from serum microbial extracellular vesicles to distinguish ovarian cancer from benign tumors. The lab further examines patient-reported outcomes, including sexual health and quality of life, to support holistic survivorship care.

In advanced-stage HGSOC, patients with germline BRCA1/2 mutations have better prognosis with longer PFS than those lacking BRCA mutations. Prognosis after NAC was different according to the BRCA mutational status.

This study aimed to investigate the impact of underweight status on the prognosis of advanced-stage ovarian cancer. We successfully developed nomograms predicting treatment response and prognosis of patients with EOC. These nomograms are expected to be useful in clinical practice and designing clinical trials.

Our nationwide registry-based study demonstrated that the incidence of OCCC in Korea increased significantly from 1999 to 2018. Early-stage OCCC had a relatively good prognosis, but advanced-stage OCCC had a worse OS than advanced-stage OSC. Therefore, the development of optimal treatment strategies for OCCC is warranted.
