Professor Seunghyun Lee's research lab specializes in advanced 2D materials and their integration into next-generation electronic and energy systems. The lab focuses on large-scale synthesis and device integration of graphene and transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs), with an emphasis on overcoming critical challenges in contact engineering, wafer-scale growth, and system-level applications. Key research directions include resistive memory devices based on 2D materials, energy-efficient wireless power transfer systems, and the development of high-performance, low-power circuits for big data and IoT applications. The lab bridges fundamental materials science with practical device engineering to enable scalable, energy-efficient technologies.

The discovery of electric field induced band gap opening in bilayer graphene opens a new door for making semiconducting graphene without aggressive size scaling or using expensive substrates. However, bilayer graphene samples have been limited to μm(2) size scale thus far, and synthesis of wafer scale bilayer graphene poses a tremendous challenge. Here we report homogeneous bilayer graphene films over at least a 2 in. × 2 in. area, synthesized by chemical vapor deposition on copper foil and subs
Creating high-quality, low-resistance contacts is essential for the development of electronic applications using two-dimensional (2D) layered materials. Many previously reported methods for lowering the contact resistance rely on volatile chemistry that either oxidize or degrade in ambient air. Nearly all reported efforts have been conducted on only a few devices with mechanically exfoliated flakes which is not amenable to large scale manufacturing. In this work, Schottky barrier heights of meta
The recent advance in radio-frequency (RF) wireless energy transfer (WET) has motivated the study of wireless powered communication network (WPCN) in which distributed wireless devices are powered via dedicated WET by the hybrid access-point (H-AP) in the downlink (DL) for uplink (UL) wireless information transmission (WIT). In this paper, by utilizing the cognitive radio (CR) technique, we study a new type of CR enabled secondary WPCN, called cognitive WPCN, under spectrum sharing with the prim
The emerging paradigm of 'abundant-data' computing requires real-time analytics on enormous quantities of data collected by a mushrooming network of sensors. Todays computing technology, however, cannot scale to satisfy such big data applications with the required throughput and energy efficiency. The next technology frontier will be monolithically integrated chips with three-dimensionally interleaved memory and logic for unprecedented data bandwidth with reduced energy consumption. In this work
Energy beamforming (EB) is a key technique for achieving efficient radio-frequency transmission enabled wireless energy transfer (WET). By optimally designing the waveforms from multiple energy transmitters (ETs) over the wireless channels, they can be constructively combined at the energy receiver (ER) to achieve an EB gain that scales with the number of ETs. However, the optimal design of EB waveforms requires accurate channel state information (CSI) at the ETs, which is challenging to obtain
Since the discovery of graphene and related forms of two-dimensional (2D) atomic layer crystals, numerous studies have reported on the fundamental material aspects, such as the synthesis, the physical properties, and the electrical properties on the transistor level. With the advancement in large-area synthesis methods, system level integration to exploit the unique applications of these materials is close at hand. The main purpose of this review is to focus on the current progress and the prosp
This letter studies a radio-frequency multi-user wireless power transfer (WPT) system, where an energy transmitter (ET) with a large number of antennas delivers energy wirelessly to multiple distributed energy receivers (ERs). We investigate a low-complexity WPT scheme based on the retrodirective beamforming technique, where all ERs send a common beacon signal simultaneously to the ET in the uplink and the ET simply conjugates and amplifies its received sum-signal and transmits to all ERs in the
We have systematically investigated the semimetal-to-semiconductor transition of individual single-crystalline Bi nanowires. For this work, we developed a technique to reduce the diameter of Bi nanowires grown by our unique on-film formation of nanowires (OFF-ON) method. Cooling down the substrate temperature during Bi film deposition by use of liquid nitrogen, film structures with small-sized grains were obtained. Through thermal annealing of these fine-granular Bi films, single-crystalline Bi
Knowledge distillation (KD) is a technique to derive optimal performance from a small student network (SN) by distilling knowledge of a large teacher network (TN) and transferring the distilled knowledge to the small SN. Since a role of convolutional neural network (CNN) in KD is to embed a dataset so as to perform a given task well, it is very important to acquire knowledge that considers intra-data relations. Conventional KD methods have concentrated on distilling knowledge in data units. To o
Wireless networks can be self-sustaining by harvesting energy from radio-frequency (RF) signals. Building on classic cognitive radio networks, we propose a novel method for network coexisting where mobiles from a secondary network, called secondary transmitters (STs), either harvest energy from transmissions by nearby transmitters from a primary network, called primary transmitters (PTs), or transmit information if PTs are sufficiently far away; STs store harvested energy in rechargeable batteri
Silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) as antibacterial agents are of considerable interest owing to their simplicity, high surface area to volume ratio, and efficient oligodynamic properties. Hence, we investigated the synthesis of silica-supported Ag NPs (SiO2@Ag) as an effective antibacterial agent by using a wet-impregnation method. The formation of SiO2@Ag with Ag NP (5-15 nm diameter) on the silica particle (100-130 nm diameter) was confirmed with transmission electron microsc
In recent years, many metal oxides have been rigorously studied to be employed as solid electrolytes for resistive switching (RS) devices. Among these solid electrolytes, lanthanum oxide (La2 O3 ) is comparatively less explored for RS applications. Given this, the present work focuses on the electrodeposition of La2 O3 switching layers and the investigation of their RS properties for memory and neuromorphic computing applications. Initially, the electr
Resistive memristors are considered to be key components in the hardware implementation of complex neuromorphic networks because of their simplicity, compactness, and manageable power dissipation. However, breakthroughs with respect to both the selector material technology and the bit-cost-effective three-dimensional (3D) device architecture are necessary to provide sufficient device density while maintaining the advantages of a two-terminal device. Despite substantial progress in the scaling of
