Professor Soon-Cheol Hong's research lab focuses on maternal-fetal medicine and reproductive health, with a strong emphasis on the impact of hormonal changes, nutritional factors, and viral infections on pregnancy outcomes. The lab investigates the roles of key biomarkers such as folate, homocysteine, and leptin in pregnancy complications like pre-eclampsia, preterm birth, and insulin resistance. Additionally, the lab explores rare placental pathologies and the molecular mechanisms underlying gynecological cancers, particularly through the study of cell surface markers like CD44v6. Their work bridges clinical obstetrics with molecular diagnostics to improve early detection and management of adverse pregnancy and gynecological conditions.
Figures are computed from collected data and may differ slightly.
Estrogen deficiency resulted in increased TNF-alpha levels. Serum leptin levels correlated positively with estrogen levels in premenopausal women. However, the increase in obesity in postmenopausal women increased leptin, which increases insulin resistance.
Although there is accumulating evidence regarding the additional protective effect of folic acid against adverse pregnancy outcomes other than neural tube defects, these effects have not been elucidated in detail. We evaluated whether folic acid supplementation is associated with favorable maternal and fetal outcomes. This was a secondary analysis of 215 pregnant women who were enrolled in our prior study. With additional data from telephone interviews regarding prenatal folic acid supplementati
The purpose of this study is to evaluate the relationship between maternal and/or cord blood folate/homocysteine concentrations and adverse pregnancy outcomes. The study population included a random sample of singleton pregnant women in whom we measured total homocysteine and folic acid in maternal or cord blood at deliveries. A total of 227 pregnant women were enrolled. The concentration of folate in maternal blood tended to be significantly lower in pre-term birth than in full-term delivery gr
CD44v6 may be involved in stromal invasion of early squamous cervical carcinomas and in the cellular differentiation of endometrial cancer. In addition, it may be useful for early diagnosis of endometrial cancer.
A large intrauterine cyst containing a heterogenous mass was found by ultrasound in the placenta of a 35-year-old gravida 2 para 1 woman. The cyst, measuring 10.9 x 10.1 cm with a heterogenous mass shadow, was attached near the placental cord insertion site. The woman delivered a healthy female baby weighing 3,330 g by cesarean section without complication. A histopathological examination revealed that the lesion was a subchorionic cyst and contained an internal hematoma. Large subchorionic cyst
This study aimed to determine the correlation between the placental thickness-to-estimated foetal weight ratio on midterm ultrasonography and small-for-gestational-age (SGA) infants. In this retrospective study, the placental thickness at the umbilical cord insertion site was measured and adjusted for foetal body weight at 18-24 weeks gestation. Investigators compared the data of women who delivered SGA infants (birth weight <10th percentile) with those of women who delivered non-SGA infants. Am
The results of this meta-analysis suggest that administration of preventive progestogen treatment to women at risk for preterm birth does not appear to negatively affect neonatal mortality in single or multiple pregnancies regardless of the route of administration.
S ince the 1980's, prenatal care for pregnant women and their babies has improved maternal and neonatal health. However, despite prenatal care, the rate of some complications, such as major fetal anomalies, preterm labor, and low birth weight have not improved. Only 10.3% of Korean women of childbearing age take folic acid supplementation and approximately 14% still consume alcohol during pregnancy. Because in Korea about 50% of pregnancies are unintended, those women have higher exposure rates
