Professor Suk Ho Byeon's research lab specializes in vitreoretinal diseases, with a focus on retinal cell survival mechanisms, retinal vascular pathology, and surgical outcomes in retinal disorders. The lab investigates molecular pathways—such as the VEGF-A/VEGFR2/PI3K/Akt axis—that influence retinal pigment epithelial (RPE) cell resilience under stress, particularly in conditions like age-related macular degeneration. They also explore imaging biomarkers, such as the middle limiting membrane sign and fluid accumulation patterns, to improve early detection of ischemic retinal damage. Additionally, the lab evaluates surgical techniques and postoperative complications, including hypotony and the effects of silicone oil tamponade on retinal structure and visual outcomes.
