Professor Sumin Kim's research lab specializes in the development and characterization of sustainable bio-based materials, with a focus on tannin-derived adhesives for wood composites, exfoliated graphite nanoplatelet (xGnP)-reinforced polymer nanocomposites for enhanced mechanical and thermal properties, and novel bio-composite phase change materials (PCMs) from agricultural and food waste. The lab employs advanced analytical techniques such as FT-IR, DSC, TGA, DMTA, and XRD to investigate curing behavior, thermal stability, viscoelasticity, and microstructure-property relationships. Research directions emphasize environmental sustainability, indoor air quality, and the valorization of biomass by-products into high-performance functional materials.
