Professor Sung-Hye Park's research lab specializes in neuro-oncology, with a focus on the molecular and pathological characterization of central nervous system tumors. The lab investigates the genetic and epigenetic alterations underlying gliomas, glioneuronal tumors, and rare brain and ovarian neoplasms, emphasizing integrated diagnosis using molecular markers such as IDH, MGMT, MMR, and TERTp. A key research direction involves understanding therapeutic resistance mechanisms in glioblastoma, particularly following temozolomide treatment, and exploring the role of mismatch repair deficiency and microsatellite instability in tumorigenesis and clinical behavior. The lab also contributes to the pathological classification of brain tumors through comprehensive immunohistochemical and genomic profiling.

The World Health Organization (WHO) classification of central nervous system (CNS) tumors was revised in 2016 with a basis on the integrated diagnosis of molecular genetics. We herein provide the guidelines for using molecular genetic tests in routine pathological practice for an accurate diagnosis and appropriate management. While astrocytomas and IDH-mutant (secondary) glioblastomas are characterized by the mutational status of IDH, TP53 , and ATRX , oligoden
Ultrastructural and immunohistochemical studies of 4 groups of cells-(human embryonic stem cells (hES), embryoid bodies (EB), and spontaneously and retinoic acid (RA)-induced differentiating cells)-were carried out to investigate their detailed phenotype. Immunohistochemically, the EB cells showed strong immunoreactivity for CD34, CD117, and nestin. Differentiating cells expressed pancytokertin, vimentin, CD31, CD56, GFAP, nestin, and NeuN as well as CD34, and c-Kit. However, synaptophysin and n
This study was designed to evaluate 4 new cases of papillary glioneuronal tumors (PGNTs), 2 of which had atypical histologic features, provides extensive IHC characterization, performed comparative genomic hybridization in 2 of our cases, and reviews the recent literature. The study group comprised 3 women and 1 man, with ages ranging from 12 to 75 years. Patients presented with seizures (n = 3) or muscle spasm (n = 1), and the tumors were located in the supratentorial region of the brain (3 in
To evaluate the mechanism of the development of therapeutic resistance after temozolomide treatment, we focused on changes in O(6)-methylguanine DNA methyltransferase (MGMT) and mismatch repair (MMR) between initial and recurrent glioblastomas. Tissue samples obtained from 24 paired histologically confirmed initial and recurrent adult glioblastoma patients who were initially treated with temozolomide were used for MGMT and MMR gene promoter methylation status and protein expression analysis usin
Mismatch repair-deficient (MMRD) brain tumors are rare among primary brain tumors and can be induced by germline or sporadic mutations. Here, we report 13 MMRD-associated (9 sporadic and 4 Lynch syndrome) primary brain tumors to determine clinicopathological and molecular characteristics and biological behavior. Our 13 MMRD brain tumors included glioblastoma (GBM) IDH-wildtype (n = 9) including 1 gliosarcoma, astrocytoma IDH-mutant WHO grade 4 (n = 2), diffuse midline glioma (DMG) H3 K27M-mutant
Primary ovarian choriocarcinoma arising from a germ cell is an extremely rare occurrence, especially in postmenopausal women, and the prognosis is poor. Non-gestational choriocarcinoma of the ovary (NGCO) accounts for 0.6% or less of all ovarian neoplasms. It is important to distinguish gestational choriocarcinomas of the ovary (GCO) from other carcinomas because of the poor prognosis of NGCO. We describe a case of NGCO with lung metastasis in a 55 year old woman, which we present together with
To verify the prognostic implications of the statuses of chromosome 1p and 19q and the expressions of p53, p16 and GFAP in oligodendrogliomas, we investigated these parameters and correlated the results with patient outcome. Twenty-seven cases of low-grade oligodendroglioma (LO) and 29 cases of anaplastic oligodendroglioma (AO) were analyzed by FISH for 1p and 19q status and by immunohistochemistry for p53, p16, and GFAP expression using a tissue microarray. Direct sequencing of the p53 gene was
A case of perivascular epithelioid cell tumor of the uterus is reported, occurring in a 32-year-old woman. The tumor (8.0 cm in dimension) showed exophytic growth from the outer half of the myometrium. Histopathologically, the tumor was composed of thick blood vessels and perivascular epithelioid cells. The neoplastic cells were strongly immunoreactive for HMB45 antigen, CD117 (c-kit), vimentin and the progesterone receptor, but completely negative for S-100 protein, smooth muscle actin, desmin,
Extraventricular neurocytoma (EVN) shares histological features with central neurocytoma, but has a wide morphological spectrum. Little is known regarding its clinicopathologic nature, biological behavior and genetic abnormalities. The aim of this study is to examine the diagnostic criteria, genetic abnormalities and biological behavior of EVN. Clinicopathological and molecular genetic studies were performed in seven EVNs. Among them, three cases showed atypical histology. Immunohistochemically,
To identify the diagnostic pitfalls as well as the value of immunohistochemical studies in making a pathologic evaluation of a pediatric intestinal pseudo-obstruction (IPO), this study reassessed the pathology of 87 surgically resected intestines from 80 patients under the impression of IPO and 10 normal controls using immunohistochemical studies. The main diagnostic pitfall was the interpretation of the enteric nervous plexuses in the transitional zone and the detection of the indistinct or imm
A recent analysis of the genetic features of medulloblastoma (MB) suggested classification into distinct subgroups according to gene expression profiles, including the Wingless signaling pathway-activated group (WNT group), the Sonic Hedgehog signaling pathway-activated group (SHH group), group 3, and group 4. To classify MB according to genetic features in practice, we analyzed 74 MBs using representative markers of each group. Based on immunohistochemistries (IHC), cytogenetic alterations, and
Poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) has received much attention as a good candidate to replace inorganic semiconductors for flexible electronics due to its solution-processability. However, the low charge mobility of P3HT is an obstacle to its commercialization. To overcome this problem, we propose a new non-covalent functionalization method for carbon nanotubes (CNTs) for use in CNT/P3HT nanocomposites. By using modified pyrene molecules with hydrophobic long alkyl chains, the non-covalently function
Papillary ependymoma is a rare variant of ependymoma and often gives rise to confusion with choroid plexus papilloma because of topographic, light microscopic and ultrastructural similarities. Here, we report two cases of papillary ependymomas regarding their unique clinicopathologic features and differential points from choroid plexus papilloma. Brain MRI revealed a large mass in the left lateral ventricle in one case and a 3cm sized mass in the pineal area and the 3rd ventricle in the other. M
