Professor Sunil Kim's research lab specializes in the political economy of state capacity, democratic consolidation, and welfare state development, with a particular focus on East Asian polities such as South Korea and Japan. The lab investigates how state violence, institutionalized repression, and the politicization of welfare policies evolve in response to democratic transitions and socio-political change. It also explores the interplay between civil society, participatory governance, and the rise of populism in regional and global contexts.
