Professor Takafumi Kubota's research lab specializes in neurological complications associated with infectious diseases and vaccinations, with a particular focus on post-infectious and post-vaccinal autoimmune and inflammatory disorders of the nervous system. The lab investigates rare neurological manifestations such as cranial nerve palsies, demyelinating neuropathies, and autoimmune encephalopathies linked to SARS-CoV-2 infection and mRNA vaccines. Key research directions include the immunological and neurophysiological mechanisms underlying conditions like anti-GQ1b antibody-associated oculomotor palsy, chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy (CIDP), and long COVID-related neuropsychiatric symptoms. The lab integrates clinical neurology, immunology, and neuroimaging to improve diagnosis and treatment of these rare but significant neurological sequelae.

Although some patients have persistent symptoms or develop new symptoms following coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) infection, neuropsychiatric aspects of long COVID are not well known. This review summarizes and provides an update on the neuropsychiatric dimensions of long COVID. Its neuropsychiatric manifestations commonly include fatigue, cognitive impairment, sleep disorders, depression, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress disorder. There are no specific tests for long COVID, but some chara
Neurological complications following vaccinations are extremely rare, but cannot be eliminated. Here, we report the first case of unilateral oculomotor nerve palsy (ONP) with anti-GQ1b antibody after receiving the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 (BNT162b2) mRNA vaccine. A 65-year-old man developed diplopia and ptosis in the right eye 17 days after vaccination, without preceding infection. Neurological examination revealed mild blepharoptosis, limitation of adduction, and vertical gaze on the right side
Localized Listeria infection predominantly occurs in the prosthetic and hip joints. We herein report a case of Listeria monocytogenes ankle osteomyelitis in a 73-year-old man receiving adalimumab who was transferred to our hospital because of suspected rheumatoid arthritis (RA) flare. He reported a four-month history of left ankle swelling. A surgical biopsy revealed L. monocytogenes osteomyelitis in the left tibia and talus bones. The patient was successfully treated with antibiotics and surgic
Cranial nerve palsy associated with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is rare. We herein report the first Asian case of the immediate onset of isolated and unilateral abducens nerve palsy (ANP) accompanied with COVID-19 infection. A 25-year-old man developed diplopia one day after the COVID-19 symptom onset. Neurological examination revealed limitation of left eye abduction without ataxia and hyporeflexia. Negative anti-ganglioside antibody results and mild albuminocytological dissociation wer
We herein report a rare case of distal chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy (CIDP) following coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) vaccination. A 39-year-old woman with a solitary plasmacytoma developed general weakness 7 days after receiving the second dose of the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine, which had progressed for 3 months. A neurological examination revealed limb weakness with areflexia. Serological tests identified the presence of IgG antibodies against anti-GM1 and anti-GM

Tuberoinfundibular dopaminergic (TIDA) neurons in the arcuate nucleus (ARC) of the hypothalamus play a role in inhibiting prolactin (PRL) secretion from the anterior pituitary. PRL is involved in a variety of behaviors, including feeding. Consequently, we hypothesized that fasting might reduce the activity of TIDA neurons, which might alter PRL secretion. However, direct examinations of TIDA neuron activity are difficult. Recently, transgenic mice were generated that expressed green fluorescent
Protein S deficiency causes spinal cord infarction in rare cases. We herein report the first case of severe cervicothoracic cord infarction in an adolescent with protein S deficiency. A 16-year-old boy presented with neck pain, four-limb paralysis, and numbness. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed spinal artery infarction in the C4 to Th4 area. Protein S antigen and activity were decreased. The patient was diagnosed with protein S deficiency-associated cervicothoracic cord infarction, which was
