Professor Takanori Honda's research lab focuses on the epidemiological and clinical investigation of lifestyle-related diseases, with a particular emphasis on the role of sedentary behavior, body composition, and dietary factors in the development of cardiometabolic and neurodegenerative diseases. The lab integrates objective (e.g., accelerometry) and subjective (e.g., self-report) assessment methods to better understand sedentary behavior and its health impacts. Key research directions include risk prediction modeling for atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD), the metabolic and inflammatory mechanisms linking muscle dysfunction and obesity to cardiovascular disease, and the role of industrially produced trans fats in dementia risk. The lab aims to inform public health policy and clinical practice through evidence-based, population-level interventions.

Sedentary behavior accumulated in a prolonged manner was associated with an increased risk of metabolic syndrome. In devising public health recommendations for the prevention of metabolic disease, the avoidance of prolonged uninterrupted periods of sedentary behavior should be considered.
Both accelerometer and self-report measurements are similarly associated with cardio-metabolic risk factors in a Japanese working adult population. Subjective and objective measures of sedentary behaviors appear to capture different aspects of behaviors. Further efforts to establish data processing methods integrating objective and subjective measures are needed to more effectively assess sedentary time's relationship to health outcomes.
We constructed a risk prediction model for the development of ASCVD in Japanese adults. This prediction model exhibits great potential as a tool for predicting the risk of ASCVD in clinical practice by enabling the identification of specific risk factors for ASCVD in individual patients.
The findings suggest that higher serum elaidic acid is a possible risk factor for the development of all-cause dementia and AD in later life. Public health policy to reduce industrially produced trans fatty acids may assist in the primary prevention of dementia.
Dynapenic obesity was a significant risk factor for the development of CVD in a general Japanese population. This association was more pronounced among those aged <65 years. Inflammation, and possibly glucose metabolism, might partly mediate this association. Our findings suggest that preventing muscle dysfunction as well as appropriate weight control, especially in middle-age, are important for preventing the development of CVD.
Longer sedentary time was associated with a higher prevalence of diabetes mellitus in a general Japanese population. Insulin resistance appeared to be mainly involved in this association. These results highlight the importance of public health strategies targeting reductions in sedentary time for the primary prevention of diabetes mellitus.
