Professor Takashi Hirama's research lab focuses on membrane biophysics and cellular lipid dynamics, particularly the roles of anionic phospholipids such as phosphatidylserine and phosphoinositides in shaping membrane curvature and organizing specialized membrane domains like caveolae. The plasma membrane is uniquely enriched in phosphatidylserine (PtdSer). This anionic phospholipid is restricted almost exclusively to the inner leaflet of the plasmalemma.
