Professor Yoon Ji Choi's research lab focuses on translational and clinical studies in anesthesiology and perioperative medicine, with a strong emphasis on neuromodulation, pain mechanisms, and environmental influences on neurodevelopmental disorders. The lab investigates the pathophysiology of neuropathic pain, particularly the role of nitric oxide and NMDA receptor signaling in central sensitization, while also exploring genetic factors affecting anesthetic responses. Additionally, the lab examines environmental exposures—such as air pollution and heavy metals—during pregnancy and their association with autism spectrum disorder and epilepsy, using large-scale national health data. The research integrates molecular mechanisms with population-level epidemiology to improve patient outcomes in critical care and neurosurgical settings.

Peripheral nerve injury may lead to a chronic neuropathic pain state that results from an increase in excitability of central neurons. This central sensitization is mediated via an N-methyl-D-aspartic acid (NMDA) receptor and may involve the production of nitric oxide (NO). As NO is suggested to play a role in nociceptive transmission following nerve injury, we examined for altered NO synthase activity at multiple levels of peripheral and spinal neural tissue in a rat model of neuropathic pain.
Postoperative anemia was associated with postoperative AKI after THRA. Although our study was limited by its retrospective design, our observation suggests that postoperative anemia may play a role in postoperative AKI.
Weak HGS was associated with impaired HRQoL in cancer survivors. Future longitudinal studies are needed to confirm the causality between HGS and HRQoL in cancer survivors.
