Professor Young S. Park's research lab specializes in the design, synthesis, and characterization of advanced organic and hybrid materials for next-generation electronic and photovoltaic applications. The lab focuses on molecular engineering of charge-transport materials, particularly for perovskite solar cells and single-molecule junctions, with an emphasis on interfacial electronic structure, molecular self-assembly, and conductance mechanisms. Key research directions include the development of novel hole- and electron-transport materials, chalcogen- and tellurium-based semiconductors, and doped carbon-allotrope analogues for optoelectronic devices. We compare the low bias conductance of a series of alkanes terminated on their ends with dimethyl phosphines, methyl sulfides, and amines and find that junctions formed with dimethyl phosphine terminated alkanes have the highest conductance. We see unambiguous conductance signatures with these link groups, indicating that the binding is well-defined and electronically selective. We report the synthesis of a tellurophene-containing low-bandgap polymer, PDPPTe2T, by microwave-assisted palladium-catalyzed ipso-arylative polymerization of 2,5-bis[(α-hydroxy-α,α-diphenyl)methyl]tellurophene with a diketopyrrolopyrrole (DPP) monomer. Compared with the corresponding thiophene analog, PDPPTe2T absorbs light of longer wavelengths and has a smaller bandgap.
