Professor Young-Mee Lee's research lab focuses on ion channel biology, particularly the transient receptor potential (TRP) channels, with an emphasis on their roles in sensory transduction, cellular signaling, and disease pathophysiology. The lab investigates TRP channels such as mTRP5 and TRPV1 in gastrointestinal, skin, and keratinocyte systems, exploring their involvement in responses to chemical, thermal, and UV stimuli. Key research directions include the molecular mechanisms of TRP channel activation, their contribution to matrix metalloproteinase regulation, and implications in skin aging and inflammatory conditions. The lab integrates molecular biology, electrophysiology, and cell signaling approaches to understand TRP channels as therapeutic targets in disease and tissue homeostasis.

We investigated which transient receptor potential (TRP) channel is responsible for the nonselective cation channel (NSCC) activated by carbachol (CCh) in murine stomach with RT-PCR and the electrophysiological method. All seven types of TRP mRNA were detected in murine stomach with RT-PCR. When each TRP channel was expressed, the current-voltage relationship of mTRP5 was most similar to that recorded in murine gastric myocytes. mTRP5 showed a conductance order of Cs(+) > K(+) > Na(+), similar t
Unresolved conflicts among healthcare professionals can lead to difficult patient care consequences. This scoping review examines the current healthcare literature that reported sources and consequences of conflict associated with individual, interpersonal, and organisational factors. We identified 99 articles published between 2001 and 2015 from PubMed, Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature, and Excerpta Medical Database. Most reviewed studies relied on healthcare professiona
Guidelines for clinical practice are intended to indicate preferred approaches to medical problems as established by scientifically valid research. Double blind, placebo-controlled studies are preferable, but reports and expert review articles are also utilized in a thorough review of the literature conducted through the National Library of Medicine's MEDLINE. When only data that will not withstand objective scrutiny are available, a recommendation is identified as a consensus of experts. Guidel
The prognosis and natural history of primary biliary cirrhosis (PBC) have improved significantly during the last few decades. Patients are diagnosed at earlier stages, are more likely to be asymptomatic at diagnosis, and are more likely to receive medical treatment. The survival of asymptomatic patients is longer than the median survival of symptomatic patients. The natural history of PBC has been assessed in the presence of effective therapy, ursodeoxycholic acid (UDCA). Evidence suggests that
Transient receptor potential vanilloid type 1 (TRPV1) is activated by various stimuli including capsaicin, heat and acid. While TRPV1 has been localized in the epidermis, little is known about the physiological role of TRPV1 in the skin, especially in skin ageing. In this study, we investigated the effect of acute UV irradiation on TRPV1 expression in human skin and the changes in TRPV1 mRNA and protein in intrinsic ageing and photoageing using human sun-protected (upper inner arm) and sun-expos
Our results suggest that TRPV1 mediates heat shock-induced MMP-1 expression via calcium-dependent PKCalpha signaling in HaCaT cells.
Colchicine may be effective treatment in some symptomatic patients with PBC who respond incompletely to UDCA alone or in combination with methotrexate. Colchicine may be tried in such patients.
Purpose: Our understanding of the characteristics that make a ‘good doctor’ is continually changing. The aim of this study is to identify the attributes deemed important for being a ‘good doctor’ and to examine to what extent doctors actually possess them. Methods: A list of characteristics of a good doctor was generated from literature review and from opinions from medical education experts, a focus group of medical students and a pilot survey of patients. An inventory comprising 33 statement
The objective of this research was to explore the influences of ``having a meal with someone`` on individuals` eating pattern. Eating is not a simple matter of energy intake but also serves to anchor daily routines being cultivated by people and society. This study was conducted using a cross-sectional eating behavior survey of university students (N = 893, 380 men, 513 women) aged 20 to 24 years. Results were analyzed and presented as frequencies, means and χ2-test with SPSS 14.0. Differences i
[Purpose] The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of Tai Chi on waist circumference and blood pressure in the elderly. The present study used a nonequivalent control group pretest-posttest design. [Subjects and Methods] Sixty-eight elderly individuals residing in J city were divided into 2 groups: 34 in the experimental group, who received Tai Chi training for 6 weeks, and 34 in the control group, who did not receive Tai Chi training. Simplified Yang style 24-form Tai Chi was us
