We discuss an interpretation that a peak in the sound velocity in neutron star matter, as suggested by the observational data, signifies strongly coupled conformal matter. The normalized trace anomaly is a dimensionless measure of conformality leading to the derivative and the nonderivative contributions to the sound velocity. We find that the peak in the sound velocity is attributed to the derivative contribution from the trace anomaly that steeply approaches the conformal limit. Smooth continu
The densest state of matter in the Universe is uniquely realized inside the central cores of the neutron star. While first-principles evaluation of the equation of state of such matter remains as one of the long-standing problems in nuclear theory, evaluation in light of neutron star phenomenology is feasible. Here we show results from a novel theoretical technique to utilize a deep neural network with supervised learning. We input up-to-date observational data from neutron star x-ray radiations
We discuss the effect of rapid rotation on the phase diagram of hadronic matter. The energy dispersion relation is shifted by an effective chemical potential induced by rotation. This suggests that rotation should lower the critical temperature of chiral restoration, but it is still controversial how the deconfinement temperature should change as a function of angular velocity. We adopt the hadron resonance gas model as an approach free from fitting parameters. We identify the deconfinement from
We discuss a methodology of machine learning to deduce the neutron star equation of state from a set of mass-radius observational data. We propose an efficient procedure to deal with a mapping from finite data points with observational errors onto an equation of state. We generate training data and optimize the neural network. Using independent validation data (mock observational data) we confirm that the equation of state is correctly reconstructed with precision surpassing observational errors
The cores of neutron stars (NSs) near the maximum mass can realize a transitional change to quark matter (QM). Gravitational waves from binary NS mergers are expected to convey information about the equation of state (EOS) sensitive to the QM transition. Here, we present the first results of gravitational wave simulation with the realistic EOS that is consistent with ab initio approaches of $\ensuremath{\chi}\mathrm{EFT}$ and pQCD and is assumed to go through smooth crossover. We compare them to
We present a model of cold QCD matter that bridges nuclear and quark matter through the duality relation between quarks and baryons. The baryon number and energy densities are expressed as functionals of either the baryon momentum distribution, f_{B}, or the quark distribution, f_{Q}, which are subject to the constraints on fermions, 0≤f_{B,Q}≤1. The theory is ideal in the sense that the confinement of quarks into baryons is reflected in the duality relation between f_{Q} and f_{B}, while other
We discuss the hard dense loop resummation at finite quark mass and evaluate the equation of state (EoS) of cold and dense QCD matter in $\ensuremath{\beta}$ equilibrium. The resummation in the quark sector has an effect of lowering the baryon number density and the EoS turns out to have much smaller uncertainty than the perturbative QCD estimate. Our numerical results favor smooth matching between the EoS from the resummed QCD calculation at high density and the extrapolated EoS from the nuclea
This study is performed with the aim of gaining insights into the possible applicability of the quark-hadron continuity concept, not only in the idealized case of three-flavor symmetric quark matter, but also for the transition from neutron matter to two-flavor quark matter. A key issue is the continuity between neutron superfluidity and a corresponding superfluid quark phase produced by $d$-quark pairing. Symmetry arguments are developed and relevant dynamical mechanisms are analyzed. It is poi
We discuss the machine-learning inference and uncertainty quantification for the equation of state (EOS) of the neutron star matter directly using the NS probability distribution from the observations. We previously proposed a prescription for uncertainty quantification based on ensemble learning by evaluating output variance from independently trained models. We adopt a different principle for uncertainty quantification to confirm the reliability of our previous results. To this end, we carry o
The equation of state for nuclear matter is essential to understanding neutron stars. Using strict QCD inequalities and input from numerical simulations on the lattice, the authors derive useful bounds on the baryon and energy densities, which are relevant to isospin symmetric matter at densities probed by heavy ion collisions.
Quark-hadron continuity with two-flavor quarks that was proposed recently connects hadronic matter with neutron $^{3}{P}_{2}$ superfluidity and two-flavor dense quark matter. This two-flavor dense quark phase consists of the coexistence of the 2SC condensates and the $P$-wave diquark condensates of $d$-quarks, which gives rise to color superconductivity as well as superfluidity. We classify vortices in this phase. The most stable vortices are what we call the non-Abelian Alice strings, which are
In this paper QCD at large isospin density is studied, which is known to be in the superfluid state with Cooper pairs carrying the same quantum number as pions. The gap equation derived from the perturbation theory up to the next-to-leading-order corrections is solved. The pairing gap at large isospin chemical potential is found to be enhanced compared to the color-superconducting gap at large baryon chemical potential due to the <a:math xmlns:a="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inli
We propose an interpolating equation of state that satisfies phenomenologically established boundary conditions in two extreme regimes at high temperature and low baryon density and at low temperature and high baryon density. We confirm that the hadron resonance gas model with the Carnahan-Starling excluded volume effect can reasonably fit the empirical equation of state at high density up to several times the normal nuclear density. We identify the onsets of strange particles and quantify the s
Lattice-quantum chromodynamics (QCD) simulations and theoretical arguments hint at the existence of an intermediate phase of strongly interacting matter between a confined hadron gas and a deconfined quark-gluon plasma (QGP). We qualitatively and semiquantitatively explore and differentiate the phase structures in the temperature window from the QCD pseudocritical temperature <a:math xmlns:a="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><a:mrow><a:msub><a:mrow><a:mi>T</a:mi></a:mrow><a:m
Alice and Boojums are both representative characters created by Lewis Carroll. We show that they possibly meet in cores of rotating neutron stars. Recent studies of quark-hadron continuity suggest that neutron superfluid matter can connect smoothly to two-flavor symmetric quark matter at high densities. We study how this can be maintained in the presence of the vortices. In the neutron matter, quantized superfluid vortices arise. In the two-flavor dense quark matter, vortices carrying color magn
