ABSTRACT

We present a fast and accurate method to select an optimal set of parameters in semi- analytic models of galaxy formation and evolution (SAMs). Our approach compares the results of a model against a set of observables applying a stochastic technique called Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO), a self-learning algorithm for localizing minima in multidimensional spaces that outperforms traditional sampling methods in terms of computational cost. We apply the PSO technique to the SAG semi-analytic model combined with merger trees extracted from a standardCDM N-body simulation. From the full set of model parameters used for the baryonic processes followed in SAG, we select six for tuning and keep all others fixed. In order to evaluate the ability of the PSO algorithm to find the best set of parameters, we perform several calibrations using different combinations of observed properties, both locally (e.g. z = 0 K-, bj- and r- band luminosity functions, the black hole (BH) mass to bulge mass relation) and at intermediate and high redshifts (supernova rates as a function of redshift, UV luminosity functions at 0.5 6 z 6 3.0). For the best parameter set found, we present the model predictions for the K- and B-band luminosity functions at z = 1, 2 and 3 and the galaxy- galaxy correlation function at z = 0. We find that galaxy properties obtained from the different calibrations are very similar, which points to the fact that the results do not depend strongly on the constraints used as long as z = 0 LFs are considered. This new approach allows a fast estimation of the best-fitting parameter set in multidimensional spaces, providing a practical tool to test the consequences of including new astrophysical processes in galaxy formation models.
