About the Lab

Professor Ahn Myeong-Hwan's research lab specializes in atmospheric remote sensing and environmental monitoring using advanced satellite and ground-based instruments. The lab focuses on improving the accuracy of atmospheric gas measurements—particularly carbon dioxide and methane—through high-resolution spectral analysis and enhanced a priori profile modeling. Key research directions include the development and validation of vertical gas profiles from Fourier Transform Spectrometers (FTS) in the Total Carbon Column Observing Network (TCCON), with a strong emphasis on capturing local and diurnal variations in greenhouse gases. The lab also investigates radiometric calibration and polarization effects in Earth-observing sensors, such as the Geostationary Environment Monitoring Spectrometer (GEMS), to enhance data quality for air quality and climate monitoring.

Journal of Physical Therapy ScienceOA

[Purpose] This study investigated the change in functional balance and weight bearing of stroke patients in a set-task balance training program and a selective-task balance training program. [Method] the participants were randomly allocated to either the set-task program or the selective-task program. We evaluated balance capacity using the Berg Balance Scale (BBS). Postural weight bearing was measured using a Tetrax Intractive Balance System, and the lower extremity function was evaluated using

The Total Carbon Column Observing Network (TCCON) utilizes Fourier Transform Spectrometers (FTS) to provide the atmospheric column-average concentrations of greenhouse gases. While the retrieval process scales a priori gas profiles as input parameters, the FTS data itself enables the derivation of vertical profiles for these gases. This study focused on deriving and validating the vertical profile of carbon dioxide (CO2) from FTS measurements at TCCON’s Anmyeondo observation site. Accurate CO2 p

This study derived the vertical profile of methane (CH4) concentrations using Fourier Transform Spectrometer (FTS) measurements from the Anmyeondo site, and validated with ground-based and airborne measurements. The a priori methane profiles currently employed by the Total Carbon Column Observing Network (TCCON) were found to inadequately represent local emissions, exhibiting weak diurnal variations, especially within the boundary layer. In contrast, methane profiles simulated by the Goddard Ear

Currently, Korea is developing a Cheollian follow-on satellite program, named asGeostationary Korea Multipurpose Satellite 2 (GK-2), which consists of two satellites. One satellite(GK-2A) is dedicated to the meterological mission, while the second one (GK-2B) hosts twomain payloads for the ocean and environmental application. As GK-2A is dedicated to the meteorologicalmission unlike Cheollian, there have been discussions on the possibility of transferringthe responsibilities of the GK-2A program

Monitoring of Atmospheric Aerosol using GMS-5 Satellite Remote Sensing Data
Kwon‐Ho Lee, Jeong Eun Kim, Young Jun Kim, Aesuk Suh, Myung Hwan Ahn
Journal of the Korean Association of Geographic Information Studies

Atmospheric aerosols interact with sunlight and affect the global radiation balance that can cause climate change through direct and indirect radiative forcing. Because of the spatial and temporal uncertainty of aerosols in atmosphere, aerosol characteristics are not considered through GCMs (General Circulation Model). Therefor it is important physical and optical characteristics should be evaluated to assess climate change and radiative effect by atmospheric aerosols. In this study GMS-5 satell

Remote sensing becomes a new and core framework for the atmospheric sciences andclosely related areas concerning with the ever-changing global environmental status. However, remote sensing in the Korea Meteorological Society is relatively new, where the first relevantpaper is appeared in 1983, as well as is an area with relatively limited number of research groups. Here, we review and summarize some of the key progress in this area within Korea MeteorologicalSociety focusing on the areas of satel

Recently released a top secret document explicitly shows that the early development plan for an earth observation satellite in the USA has a hidden and more important purpose for a concept of 'free space' than the scientific purpose. At that time, the hidden and secret concept imbedded within the early space development plan prevail other national policies of the USA government for purpose of the national security. Under these circumstances, it is quite reasonable to accept a possibility that th

The Korea’s Geostationary Multi-Purpose Satellite-2A (GK2A) was launched in December 2018 with its main payload, Advanced Meteorological Imager (AMI). Using the 9 infrared channels of the AMI, an algorithm has been developed to retrieve vertical profiles of temperature and humidity for the clear-sky. The algorithm, named as AMI Atmospheric Profile (AAP), is based on an optimal estimation method with its a priori information from model forecasts. From the retrieved profiles, total precipitable wa
