About the Lab

Professor Alena Kulinich’s research lab specializes in the intellectual and theological history of Islam, with a particular focus on classical and modern interpretations of the Qur’an (tafsir). The lab explores the evolution of exegetical traditions, especially within the Mu‘tazilite, Sunni, and Sufi schools, examining how theological affiliations shape hermeneutical choices and interpretive authority. It also investigates the role of personal reasoning (ra’y) in tafsir, the historical discourse on religious diversity in Islamic thought, and the modern revival of rationalist Islamic traditions such as Neo-Mu‘tazilism.

Moral Visions in Medieval Muslim Interpretations of Sūra 102 Al-Takāthur: Warnings against Pride, Wealth, or Pleasure?
Alena Kulinich
SJR Q1ReligionsOA

This article focuses on sūra 102 al-Takāthur of the Qur’ān which addresses those preoccupied with al-takāthur (competition for superiority in number, or accumulation of wealth), warning them of the punishment of Hell in the Hereafter and of their interrogation about al-na‘īm (the worldly pleasures) on the Day of Judgement. The grave eschatological implications of engaging in al-takāthur and al-na‘īm, conveyed in this sūra, have triggered attempts by Muslim scholars to determine the intended mean

Beyond theology: Muʿtazilite scholars and their authority in al-Rummānī'stafsīr
Alena Kulinich
SJR Q1Bulletin of the School of Oriental and African Studies

Abstract Muʿtazilite exegetical tradition has been defined primarily by reference to the theological dimensions of the tafsīr works authored by the Muʿtazila. This article is an attempt to go beyond this focus by exploring the significance of an exegete's affiliation to the tradition that is implicit in his selection of interpretations and his references to authorities. Focusing on the tafsīr of the tenth-century Muʿtazilite scholar ʿAlī ibn ʿĪsā al-Rummānī, the article analyses al-Rummānī's ref

“Personal Opinion” in Qurʾānic Exegesis: Medieval Debates and Interpretations of al-Tafsīr bi-l-Raʾy
Alena Kulinich
SJR Q2Der IslamOA

Abstract This article explores the long-contested question about the role of individual judgement vis-à-vis the authority of tradition in the interpretation of the Qurʾān. It focuses on the notion of al-tafsīr bi-l-raʾy – interpretation of the Qurʾān by “personal opinion” – and offers an insight into medieval Muslim debates over the legitimacy of this type of exegesis, its alleged prophetic disapproval, and the scope and conditions of its use. Based on the Sunnī tafsīr works from the 3rd/9th to

Alena Kulinich
Asia Review

This article discusses modern interpretations of Mu‘tazilism, a rationalist tradition of Islamic thought that flourished during the time of the ‘Abbasid Caliphate (750–1258). Modern endeavours to rediscover and revive this tradition since the early 20SUPth/SUP century, often referred to as ‘Neo-Mu‘tazilism’, span geographical, cultural, and political divides. The focus of this article is on the contribution of the prominent Egyptian intellectual Aḥmad Amīn (1886–1954) who is credited with rehabi

Rethinking Mu`tazilite tafsir: from essence to history
Alena Kulinich
Seoul National University Open Repository (Seoul National University)

It has been common to approach the history of the interpretation of the Quran (tafsir) through the study of different traditions or schools of tafsir. These schools usually correspond to various Islamic intellectual/sectarian traditions and include, among others, the Twelver Shiite, Sunni, Mutazilite and Sufi tafsir traditions. An underlying assumption in this division is that each of these traditions developed a distinct approach to the text of the Quran, and that tafsir works authored by schol

Discourses on Diversity in Medieval Interpretation of the Qur’ān
Alena Kulinich
Annals of Korean Association of the Islamic Studies

References to historical conceptions of diversity in the Islamic tradition have become an important part of modern debates about Islam, tolerance, and pluralism. While the concepts of ikhtilāf (recognised difference of opinion among the Islamic jurists) in jurisprudence and ahl al-dhimma (protected communities of non-Muslims under Islamic rule) in the domain of interfaith relations, have received most scholarly attention, this article draws attention to conceptions of diversity in the field of e
