About the Lab

Professor Bo-Hyoung Jin's research lab focuses on oral health disparities across the lifespan, with a strong emphasis on preventive dentistry, geriatric oral health, and the impact of social determinants on oral disease outcomes. The lab investigates the interplay between cognitive and non-cognitive factors in dental student performance, while also exploring the immunological microenvironment in rare tumors such as pheochromocytoma and paraganglioma. A key focus is on improving oral health outcomes through targeted interventions for vulnerable populations, including children, the disabled, and older adults living alone.

Early Childhood Caries: Prevalence and Risk Factors in Seoul, Korea
Bo‐Hyoung Jin, Deuk‐Sang Ma, Hyock‐Soo Moon, DaMI Paik, Se‐Hyun Hahn, Alice M. Horowitz
SJR Q2Journal of Public Health DentistryOA

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to determine the prevalence of early childhood caries (ECC), including noncavitated lesions (d1), in children 6-59 months of age in relation to socioeconomic factors, feeding practices, and oral health behaviors in Seoul, Korea. METHODS: The children attended child care facilities and were selected from 32 primary sampling units. Two dentists examined 470 children. Parents of 383 of the subjects were interviewed by phone regarding caries risk factors. RES

Oral health status of the disabled compared with that of the non-disabled in Korea: A propensity score matching analysis
Jae‐Young Lee, Kyung-Cheol Lim, Soyun Kim, Hye-Ran Paik, Young‐Jae Kim, Bo‐Hyoung Jin
SJR Q1PLoS ONEOA

BACKGROUND: There are many types of disabilities, and each type has a variety related to socioeconomic factors. Such factors affect to many health problems of the disabled. However, surveys of the oral health status of the disabled in Korea are rare. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to estimate oral health disparity through comparing oral health status of the disabled to the non-disabled, adjusted for the net effect of the disability on oral health status. METHODS: A cross-sectional stud

Who Succeeds at Dental School? Factors Predicting Students’ Academic Performance in a Dental School in Republic of Korea
Jungjoon Ihm, Gene Lee, Kack‐Kyun Kim, Ki‐Taeg Jang, Bo‐Hyoung Jin
SJR Q2Journal of Dental Education

The purpose of this study was to examine what cognitive and non-cognitive factors were responsible for predicting the academic performance of dental students in a dental school in the Republic of Korea. This school is one of those in Korea that now require applicants to have a bachelor's degree. In terms of cognitive factors, students' undergraduate grade point average (GPA) and Dental Education Eligibility Test (DEET) scores were used, while surveys were conducted to evaluate four non-cognitive

Comparison of oral health status and daily nutrient intake between elders who live alone and elders who live with family: Based on the Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES VI) (2013‐2015)
Eun‐Jeong Kim, Bo‐Hyoung Jin
SJR Q1Gerodontology

OBJECTIVE: To compare the nutritional factors and oral status of elders living alone and elders living with their families in Korea. BACKGROUND: Numerous studies have found that the presence of fewer remaining teeth is associated with decreased nutrient intake; however, there is no study comparing the nutritional status and oral status of elders living alone with that of elders living with family based on a nationally representative sample. METHODS: A sample of 2904 individuals who participated

Due to fewer adverse events, faster onset of action, and longer durable responses compared to chemotherapy, immunotherapy has been widely used to treat advanced solid tumors. Moreover, immunotherapy can improve the autoimmune status, thus allowing patients to benefit from the treatment in the long term. The immune microenvironment status is closely associated with the response to chemotherapies. Here, we analyzed the characteristics of the immune microenvironment in pheochromocytoma and paragang

SJR Q1Journal of Colloid and Interface ScienceOA

Lithium-sulfur batteries (LSBs) have emerged as highly promising next-generation chemical power sources, characterized by their elevated specific energy. Their exceptionally high theoretical energy density has attracted considerable attention in both academic research and industrial application. Nonetheless, the shuttle effect and sluggish redox kinetics significantly hinder their advancement, resulting in the rapid deterioration of battery capacity and substantially limiting their practical app
