About the Lab

Professor Bo Hyun Yoon's research lab focuses on translational biomedical research with a strong emphasis on reproductive health, antibiotic toxicity, and metabolic disorders. The lab investigates the pathogenesis and risk factors of endometriosis, particularly the role of damage-associated molecular patterns (DAMPs) in disease initiation, as well as prognostic markers like CA-125 and adhesion scores in recurrence. It also explores metabolic complications in polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), especially the link between hyperandrogenism, metabolic syndrome, and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Additionally, the lab examines nephrotoxicity mechanisms of last-resort antibiotics like polymyxin B, aiming to improve drug safety through tissue distribution and oxidative stress studies.

Our results suggest that of the rAFS adnexal adhesion scores, the ovarian adhesion score rather than the tubal adhesion score was associated with a significantly increased risk of recurrent endometriosis. The preoperative serum CA-125 level may be also a significant prognostic factor for recurrence, as known. However, it seemed to only have borderline significance in affecting recurrence in the current study.

Polymyxins (polymyxin B and colistin) are cyclic lipopeptide antibiotics that serve as a last-line defence against Gram-negative “superbugs”. In the present study, two novel fluorescent polymyxin probes were designed through regio-selective modifications of the polymyxin B core structure at the N-terminus and the hydrophobic motif at positions 6 and 7.
