About the Lab
Professor Bongjin Lee's research lab specializes in clinical and translational biomedical research, with a focus on antimicrobial resistance, pediatric critical care, and diagnostic innovation. The lab develops machine learning models to predict clinical outcomes in emergency and intensive care settings, particularly for pediatric patients with severe infections or critical illness. It also investigates the prevalence and molecular characteristics of pathogenic bacteria, such as ESBL-producing Enterobacteriaceae and group B streptococcus, and addresses public health concerns related to drug adulteration in dietary supplements. The lab integrates clinical data, microbiological analysis, and advanced computational methods to improve patient outcomes and clinical decision-making.

15The commercial success of synthetic phosphodiesterase-5 (PDE-5) inhibitors (viz. sildenafil, vardenafil and tadalafil) for erectile dysfunction (ED) has led to their widespread use as adulterants in dietary supplements (DSs). Reports on adulteration by ED drugs or their analogues in DSs suggest they may cause a serious threat to human health. The problem is becoming more complex as hidden and structurally modified analogues are continuously being reported. To analyse known drugs and their analog
This study found no significant difference in the treatment outcome between pediatric patients treated with carbapenem and those treated with non-carbapenem antimicrobials for UTI caused by ESBL-producing Enterobacteriaceae. Therefore, the initially administered non-carbapenem can be maintained in UTI patients showing clinical improvement.
OBJECTIVES: Triage is an essential emergency department (ED) process designed to provide timely management depending on acuity and severity; however, the process may be inconsistent with clinical and hospitalization outcomes. Therefore, studies have attempted to augment this process with machine learning models, showing advantages in predicting critical conditions and hospitalization outcomes. The aim of this study was to utilize nationwide registry data to develop a machine learning-based class
BACKGROUND: Group B streptococcus (GBS) is one of the leading causes of invasive infections in infants. This study aimed to investigate the genotypic diversity of GBS causing invasive infections in infants and to observe the prevalence of the highly virulent clone in South Korea. METHODS: Invasive strains of GBS were collected prospectively from infants admitted at 4 hospitals during 1995-2015. Serotype and multilocus sequence typing were determined. All isolates underwent polymerase chain react
The aim of this study was to develop a predictive model of pediatric mortality in the early stages of intensive care unit (ICU) admission using machine learning. Patients less than 18 years old who were admitted to ICUs at four tertiary referral hospitals were enrolled. Three hospitals were designated as the derivation cohort for machine learning model development and internal validation, and the other hospital was designated as the validation cohort for external validation. We developed a rando
The eGFR correlates with the VTL, and the eGFR cutoff value can predict a subtherapeutic vancomycin level. eGFR is a reliable and efficient alternative to mGFR for identifying ARC. .
Initial vital signs of children at the emergency department may be abnormal because of anxiety and irritability, resulting in unrealistic triage levels. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of pediatric triage by clinical decision based on the patient's general condition. The Pediatric Korean Triage and Acuity Scale (PedKTAS) has been used nationwide for triage since 2016. The triage level, as assessed by an experienced triage nurse and based on the patient's clinical condition, was de

To effectively use vital signs as indicators in children, the magnitude of deviation from expected vital sign distribution should be determined. The purpose of this study is to derive age-specific centile charts for the heart rate and respiratory rate of the children who visited the emergency department. This study used the Korea's National Emergency Department Information System dataset. Patients aged <16 years visiting the emergency department between 1 January 2016 and 31 December 2017 were i
Human annexin I is a member of the annexin family of calcium-dependent phospholipid binding proteins. The structure of an N-terminally truncated human annexin I (delta-annexin I) and its interactions with Ca2+, Mg2+, and ATP were studied at the atomic level using nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. Since delta-annexin I is a large protein, with a molecular weight of 35 kDa, a site-specific (carbonyl-13C, amide-15N) labeling technique was used to determine the interaction sites of delt

Most epidural abscesses are a secondary lesion of pyogenic spondylodiscitis. An epidural abscess associated with pyogenic arthritis of the facet joint is quite rare. To the best of our knowledge, there is no report of the use of antibiotic-cement beads in the surgical treatment of an epidural abscess. This paper reports a 63-year-old male who sustained a 1-week history of radiating pain to both lower extremities combined with lower back pain. MRI revealed space-occupying lesions, which were loca
