About the Lab

Professor Bu-sung Kim's research spans interdisciplinary domains, integrating molecular virology, computational modeling, and literary studies. His lab focuses on viral genomics, particularly the molecular epidemiology and genotyping of human pathogens like TT virus and GBV-C/HGV, using bioinformatics and molecular biology techniques. In parallel, the lab explores computational optimization in aerospace engineering, applying mathematical modeling and parameter optimization to UAV path planning under threat conditions. Additionally, the lab engages in critical humanities research, analyzing modernist and contemporary literature—especially Virginia Woolf and Kazuo Ishiguro—to examine themes of truth, subjectivity, and care in cultural and historical contexts.

New genotypes of TT virus (TTV) and a genotyping assay based on restriction fragment length polymorphism1

A phylogenetic analysis, using the open reading frame I sequence of 93 TT viruses (TTV) obtained from various geographical areas, indicated that the virus could be classified into six different genotypes including three hitherto unreported genotypes. The high reliability of the six clusters was confirmed by bootstrap analysis. On the basis of these sequence data, a new simple genotyping assay based on a restriction fragment length polymorphism of TTV was developed. Using the enzymes NdeI and Pst

The 5'-untranslated region (5'-UTR) sequences of 33 GB virus C/hepatitis G virus (GBV-C/HGV) obtained from different geographic areas were determined through reverse-transcription polymerase chain reaction and dideoxy chain termination sequencing, the alignment of sequences, the estimation of the number of nucleotide substitution per site, and construction of phylogenetic trees. The 5'-UTR of GBV-HGV was found to be heterogeneous, with 70.9-99.5% homology. Three distinct phylogenetic branches we

Optimal Path Planning for UAVs to Reduce Radar Cross Section
Boo‐Sung Kim, Hyochoong Bang
SJR Q2International Journal of Aeronautical and Space SciencesOA

Parameter optimization technique is applied to planning UAVs(Unmanned Aerial Vehicles) path under artificial enemy radar threats. The ground enemy radar threats are characterized in terms of RCS(Radar Cross Section) parameter which is a measure of exposure to the radar threats. Mathematical model of the RCS parameter is constructed by a simple mathematical function in the three-dimensional space. The RCS model is directly linked to the UAVs attitude angles in generating a desired trajectory by r

Shock and Astonishment: The Rise of Cinema Spectatorship and What Maisie Knew
Boo‐Sung Kim
SJR Q2˜The œHenry James review

The reading public that caught James's attention in the late 1890s and cinema spectators that emerged in the same period were not two exclusive groups. James, his contemporary readers, and cinema spectators all inhabited and were being engulfed by the same mediascape that constituted their fledgling spectatorial subjectivity. James actively interacted with early film culture in his 1897 novel What Maisie Knew by foregrounding spectatorial experiences in the relationships among characters, narrat

From “Einfühlung” to Empathy: The Problem of Other Minds and Aesthetic Encounters in Pursuit of Self-Understanding in Dorothy Richardson’s Pointed Roofs

http://www.baf.or.kr

While literary modernism’s signature narrative style, stream of consciousness, has been widely studied from the perspective of Freudian psychoanalysis, other possible inter-influences between modernism and psychology have received little scholarly attention. This paper asks for the need to move beyond Freud by calling attention to the approximate coincidence of the emergence of literary modernism and the introduction of the word “empathy” into English. Empathy was coined by the English psycholog

Women’s Universities and Protests in the Face of the Coeducation Debate and Political Turmoil
Boo‐Sung Kim
In/Outside English Studies in Korea

This article traces the recent history of debates surrounding women’s universities and examines how student protests against the coeducation plan at Dongduk Women’s University intersected with the broader political unrest that followed the failed martial law attempt and the subsequent presidential impeachment movement. Drawing on in-class discussions among undergraduates at Ewha Womans University, I analyze how contemporary women students perceive their institutions. I also turn to Judith Butler
