About the Lab

Professor Byung Gu Yoon's research lab focuses on the multifaceted roles of estrogen and hormone therapy in postmenopausal women, particularly in the context of cognitive health, cardiovascular risk, and bone metabolism. The lab investigates the neuroprotective and vascular effects of menopausal hormone therapy (MHT), including the impact of estradiol and progesterone on cognitive function, blood pressure regulation, and vascular smooth muscle cell activity. A central theme is understanding how hormonal changes during menopause influence age-related diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease, hypertension, and osteoporosis. The lab also explores molecular mechanisms, such as nongenomic antioxidant pathways and fibrinolytic regulation, in vascular and metabolic pathways.

Cognitive impairment is significantly associated with lower BMD in postmenopausal women. This finding suggests that cognitive aging is clearly multifactorial, but estrogen deficiency may be one of the contributing factors.

In VSMCs stimulated with lysoPC, 17β-E₂ reduced PAI-1 expression through a non-receptor-mediated mechanism via antioxidant activity as well as a receptor-mediated mechanism; however, it did not alter t-PA secretion. Of note, 17β-E₂ suppressed PAI-1 activity and concurrently enhanced t-PA activity, suggesting a beneficial influence on fibrinolysis.
