About the Lab

Professor Byung Sik Kim's research lab specializes in cardiovascular and metabolic health, with a focus on the interrelationships among hypertension, kidney function, and cardiovascular outcomes. The lab investigates longitudinal disease progression, particularly through the lens of the cardiovascular-kidney-metabolic (CKM) syndrome framework, emphasizing early detection and risk stratification using biomarkers such as eGFR, proteinuria, and pulse wave velocity. Their work integrates large-scale population-based data to evaluate prognostic indicators and lifestyle interventions in diverse clinical populations.

Effect of low sodium and high potassium diet on lowering blood pressure and cardiovascular events

SJR Q1Clinical HypertensionOA

Incorporating aggressive lifestyle modifications along with antihypertensive medication therapy is a crucial treatment strategy to enhance the control rate of hypertension. Dietary modification is one of the important lifestyle interventions for hypertension, and it has been proven to have a clear effect. Among food ingredients, sodium and potassium have been found to have the strongest association with blood pressure. The blood pressure-lowering effect of a low sodium diet and a high potassium

Association of the Estimated Pulse Wave Velocity with Cardio-Vascular Disease Outcomes among Men and Women Aged 40–69 Years in the Korean Population: An 18-Year Follow-Up Report on the Ansung–Ansan Cohort in the Korean Genome Environment Study

SJR Q2Journal of Personalized MedicineOA

The estimated pulse wave velocity (ePWV) can predict adverse cardiovascular disease (CVD) outcomes in patients with increased CVD risks. However, data on its predictive capacity for CVD outcomes in the general population are limited. This study aimed to investigate the association between the ePWV and CVD outcomes among Korean adults. Ten thousand thirty patients aged 40-69 years from the Ansung-Ansan cohort in a prospective community-based cohort study were followed up for over 18 years. The eP

BACKGROUND: The association between renal function and all-cause mortality in patients with hypertensive crisis remains unclear. We aimed to identify the impact of estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) on all-cause mortality in patients with hypertensive crisis visiting the emergency department (ED). METHODS: This retrospective study included patients aged ≥18 years admitted to the ED between 2016 and 2019 for hypertensive crisis (systolic blood pressure ≥180 mmHg and/or diastolic blood pr

SJR Q2Journal of Personalized MedicineOA

Proteinuria, frequently observed in hypertensive crisis, is a risk factor for cardiovascular and all-cause mortality in patients with hypertension. Here we investigated the association between proteinuria and all-cause mortality in patients with a hypertensive crisis in the emergency department (ED). This retrospective study included patients admitted to the ED of a tertiary referral center between 2016 and 2019 with hypertensive crisis (systolic blood pressure ≥ 180 mmHg or diastolic blood pres

Longitudinal Changes in Cardiovascular-Kidney-Metabolic Syndrome Stages and Their Impact on Outcomes: A Nationwide Cohort Study

SJR Q1Journal of Clinical MedicineOA

Background/Objectives: The impact of longitudinal changes in cardiovascular-kidney-metabolic (CKM) stage remains unclear. This study evaluated the association between CKM stage progression and clinical outcomes. Methods: We used the Korean National Health Insurance Database to identify adults aged ≥ 20 years who underwent two health checkups between 2009 and 2012. CKM stages were assessed at both time points and categorized as decreased, maintained, or increased over a 1–2-year interval. The pri

Hepatic steatosis in cardiovascular–kidney–metabolic syndrome: fatty liver Index as a predictor of cardiovascular outcomes
Byung Sik Kim, Hyun‐Jin Kim, Hasung Kim, Jungkuk Lee, Sang Bong Ahn, Jeong‐Hun Shin, Young Hyo Lim
SJR Q1European Journal of Preventive Cardiology

AIMS: Cardiovascular-kidney-metabolic (CKM) syndrome describes the interplay between metabolic dysfunction, chronic kidney disease, and cardiovascular disease. While this framework advances our understanding of interrelated pathophysiology across multiple organ systems, further exploring the liver's role may be beneficial. The fatty liver index (FLI) is a cost-effective indicator of hepatic steatosis; however, its prognostic role in CKM syndrome remains unclear. METHODS: This retrospective cohor

When adjusted covariates, less sleep duration and poor sleep quality were positively associated with nighttime systolic BP. Additionally, sleep quality was the independent associated factor for dipper and reverse dipper phenotypes. The study also found that male sex, low estimated glomerular filtration rate, high ambulatory BP, low office BP, and poor sleep quality were associated with blunted nighttime SBP dipping.

Association between Estimated Pulse Wave Velocity and Incident Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease in Korean Adults
Byung Sik Kim, Hyun‐Jin Kim, Jeong‐Hun Shin
PulseOA

Introduction: Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is associated with vascular dysfunction, one of the signs of which is arterial stiffness. Carotid-femoral pulse wave velocity (PWV), which is considered the gold standard measure of arterial stiffness, can be estimated using two commonly assessed clinical variables: age and blood pressure. This study aimed to evaluate the association between estimated PWV (ePWV) and the prevalence and incidence of NAFLD among Korean adults. Methods: This stu

B-type natriuretic peptide (BNP) is a well-established prognostic factor for cardiovascular disorders. However, the association between BNP levels and mortality in patients with acute severe hypertension remains unclear. OBJECTIVE: High levels of D-dimer, a marker of thrombotic events, are associated with poor outcomes in patients with various cardiovascular diseases. However, there has been no research on its prognostic implications in acute severe hypertension. This study investigated the association between D-dimer levels and long-term mortality in patients with severe acute hypertension who visited the emergency department. Objective The long-term clinical effect of arterial stiffness in high-risk disease entities remains unclear. The prognostic implications of brachial-ankle pulse wave velocity (baPWV) were assessed using a real-world registry that included patients who underwent percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). Methods Arterial stiffness was measured using baPWV before discharge. The primary outcome was net adverse clinical events (NACE), defined as a composite of all-cause death, non-fatal myocardial in
