About the Lab
Professor Chan Mi Lee's research lab focuses on translational biomedical research with a strong emphasis on clinical oncology, immunology, and molecular breeding in agriculture. The lab investigates prognostic biomarkers in colorectal cancer, such as myosteatosis, and explores host-pathogen interactions in severe infections like CRAB bacteraemia. It also examines immune-related adverse events in cancer immunotherapy, particularly vasculitis, and contributes to improving diagnostic and therapeutic strategies. Additionally, the lab applies molecular genetics to enhance crop traits, notably grain size in rice, through allele-based breeding models.

15BACKGROUND: Myosteatosis has been reported to be a novel biomarker that could predict survival outcomes in patients with colorectal cancer. However, results have been conflicting. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to evaluate the long-term impact of myosteatosis on the survival of these patients. METHODS: A systematic search of PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane up to 27 November 2019 generated 7022 records. Studies that reported hazard ratio (HR) for overall survival, cancer-specific sur
BACKGROUND: Bone marrow-derived macrophages (BMDMs) are widely used primary cells for studying macrophage function. However, despite numerous protocols that are currently available, lack of a notable consensus on generating BMDMs may obscure the reliability in comparing findings from different studies or laboratories. FINDINGS: In this study, we addressed the effect of cell density on the resulting macrophage population. With reference to previously published methods, bone marrow cells from wild
Our results suggest that a large proportion of CRAB bacteraemia with high severity progresses to a rapidly fatal course, regardless of the underlying diseases or source of infection. Further studies might be needed to investigate the microbiological factors associated with CRAB and pathogen-host interaction in patients with EM.
BACKGROUND: Grain size is one of the key factors determining yield and quality in rice. A large number of genes are involved in the regulation of grain size parameters such as grain length and grain width. Different alleles of these genes have different impacts on the grain size traits under their control. However, the combined influence of multiple alleles of different genes on grain size remains to be investigated. Six key genes known to influence grain size were investigated in this study: GS
Vasculitis as an irAE appears clinically heterogeneous and rare. Among reported cases with adequate documentation, vasculitis is of delayed onset following the initiation of immunotherapy. Outcomes of ICI-vasculitis were generally favorable, responding to glucocorticoids and immunotherapy withdrawal. There is an urgent need for more standardized reporting of rare irAEs such as vasculitis to clarify clinical risks, classification, relationship to immunotherapy and outcomes.
This study aimed to evaluate the differences in clinical characteristics and impact of carbapenem resistance (CR) on outcomes between Acinetobacter baumannii (Ab) and Pseudomonas aeruginosa (Pa) bacteraemia. We prospectively identified all patients with Ab and Pa bacteraemia in 10 hospitals over 1 year. Treatment failure was defined as all-cause 30-day mortality, persistent bacteraemia, or recurrent bacteraemia within 30 days. We included 304 Ab and 241 Pa bacteraemia cases. CR was detected in 2
The position-sensitive multi-anode photomultiplier tube (MA-PMT) is widely used in high-resolution scintillation detectors. However, the anode gain nonuniformity of this device is a limiting factor that degrades the intrinsic performance of the detector module. The aim of this work was to develop a gain compensation method for the MA-PMT and evaluate the resulting enhancement in the performance of the detector. The method employs a circuit that is composed only of resistors and is placed between
PURPOSE: B-cell depleting therapies, including T-cell engager (TCE), are increasingly used for patients with hematologic malignancies, including during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. We aimed to evaluate the relationship between TCE therapy and COVID-19-related outcomes among patients with COVID-19 and B-cell lymphomas receiving B-cell depleting therapy. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This retrospective cohort study included patients with B-cell lymphoma, who were admitted to Seoul Na
In the hospitalized setting, vaccinated and unvaccinated COVID-19 patients showed different clinical features and risk of oxygen demand despite a relatively high proportion of patients in the two groups. Vaccination needs to be assessed as an initial checkpoint, and chest X-ray may be helpful for predicting severe progression in vaccinated patients.
Background: The clinical outcomes and immunological features of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) patients receiving B-cell depletion therapy (BCDT), especially in Omicron variant era, have not been fully elucidated. We aimed to investigate the outcomes and immune responses of COVID-19 patients receiving BCDT during the Omicron period. Methods: We retrospectively compared clinical outcomes between COVID-19 patients treated with BCDT (the BCDT group) and those with the same underlying diseases n
BACKGROUND: Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is characterized by excessive synovial inflammation. Cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) is an enzyme that catalyzes the conversion of arachidonic acid (AA) into prostaglandins. Epithelium-specific Ets transcription factor-1 (ESE-1) was previously demonstrated to upregulate COX-2 in co-operation with nuclear factor kappa B (NFκB) in macrophages and chondrocytes. However, the role of ESE-1 in RA pathology has remained unclear. In this study, we aimed to elucidate the re
We compare many normality tests consisting of different sources of information extracted from the given data: Anderson-Darling test, Kolmogorov-Smirnov test, Cramervon Mises test, Shapiro-Wilk test, Shaprio-Francia test, Lilliefors, Jarque-Bera test, D'Agostino' D, Doornik-Hansen test, Energy test and Martinzez-Iglewicz test. For the purpose of comparison, those tests are applied to the various types of data generated from skewed distribution, unsymmetric distribution, and distribution with diff
Tuberculosis (TB) is a common opportunistic infection in human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infected patients. Patients with multidrug-resistant (MDR)-TB have poor outcomes. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of MDR-TB in HIV/TB co-infected patients in the Korea. We reviewed the medical records of HIV/TB co-infected patients at two university hospitals between January 1998 and December 2020. During the study period, a total of 87 HIV/TB co-infected patients were identified, and drug su
We demonstrated that the positivity rates of mycobacterial culture in TS were 69.0-85.3%. Paraspinal tissues as biopsy sites were significantly associated with culture positivity in needle biopsy, suggesting that targeting paraspinal tissues during needle biopsy may be the best method for diagnosing TS.
