About the Lab
Professor Chang Kyung Kang's research lab specializes in viral immunology and host-pathogen interactions, with a strong focus on understanding the immune responses to emerging respiratory viruses such as MERS-CoV and SARS-CoV-2. The lab investigates cellular immune mechanisms, including T-cell activation, memory responses, and cytokine profiles, particularly in the context of severe disease and nosocomial transmission. They also evaluate the immunogenicity of vaccines and antiviral therapies, such as lopinavir/ritonavir and hydroxychloroquine, in both in vitro and clinical settings. Their work provides critical insights into the pathogenesis of coronavirus infections and the development of effective host-directed interventions.

15Nosocomial transmission is an important characteristic of Middle East Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus (MERS-CoV) infection. Risk factors for transmission of MERS-CoV in healthcare settings are not well defined. During the Korean outbreak in 2015, 186 patients had laboratory-confirmed MERS-CoV infection. Those suspected as a source of viral transmission were categorized into the spreader groups (super-spreader [n = 5] and usual-spreader [n = 10]) and compared to the non-spreader group (n = 171).
Severe COVID-19 had a higher degree of proliferation, activation, and cytotoxicity of T-cells at the late phase of illness without cytotoxic T-cell contraction, which might contribute to the development of severe COVID-19.
Lopinavir/ritonavir showed significant inhibitory effects on SARS-CoV-2 in vitro at its usual plasma concentration. However, the in vitro antiviral activity of hydroxychloroquine at concentrations commonly used in humans was minimal, whether used alone or in combination with lopinavir/ritonavir.
BACKGROUND: Understanding the memory T-cell response to severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) is crucial for assessing the longevity of protective immunity after SARS-CoV-2 infection or coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) vaccination. However, the longitudinal memory T-cell response up to 8 months post-symptom onset (PSO) according to the severity of illness is unknown. METHODS: We analyzed peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) from healthy volunteers or patients with

BACKGROUND: We assessed cell-mediated immune (CMI) responses of influenza vaccination in patients with cancer receiving immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs), which remain elusive. METHODS: Vaccine-elicited CMI responses in patients receiving ICIs or cytotoxic agents were investigated by flow cytometry. Polyfunctional cells were defined as T cells that express 2 or more of interleukin 2 (IL-2), interleukin 4 (IL-4), interferon gamma (IFN-γ), and CD107a. An adequate CMI response was defined as an i
BACKGROUND: The need for mandatory confirmation of negative conversion in Klebsiella pneumoniae bacteremia (KpB) has not been adequately addressed. We conducted a retrospective case-control study of adult patients with KpB over a 5-year period in two tertiary-care hospitals to determine the risk factors for persistent bacteremia and to reevaluate the necessity of follow-up blood culture in KpB. METHODS: Persistent KpB is defined as the finding of K. pneumoniae in more than two separate blood-cul
Staphylococcal cassette chromosome mec element (SCCmec) type-dependent clinical outcomes may vary due to geographical variation in the presence of virulence determinants. We compared the microbiological factors and mortality attributed to methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) bacteremia between SCCmec types II/III and type IV. All episodes of MRSA bacteremia in a tertiary-care hospital (South Korea) over a 4.5-year period were reviewed. We studied the microbiological factors associa
The incidence of invasive fungal infection (IFI) in patients with acute myeloid leukemia (AML) has decreased with the introduction of antimold prophylaxis. Although acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) has a lower risk of IFI than does AML, the incidences of IFI in both AML and ALL in the era of antimold prophylaxis should be re-evaluated. We analyzed adults with AML or ALL who had undergone induction, re-induction, or consolidation chemotherapy from January 2017 to December 2019 at Seoul National
BACKGROUND: Diagnostic value of β-d-glucan (BDG) in populations with low prevalence of invasive fungal infection (IFI), such as hematologic patients receiving antimold prophylaxis, should be re-evaluated. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed episodes with BDG results in hematologic patients receiving antimold prophylaxis from January 2017 to August 2019 in a tertiary hospital. The episodes were classified as true positive ([TP] positive BDG with IFI), true negative ([TN] negative BDG without IFI
BACKGROUND: Practical guidance is needed regarding the vaccination of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) convalescent individuals in resource-limited countries. It includes the number of vaccine doses that should be given to unvaccinated patients who experienced COVID-19 early in the pandemic. METHODS: We recruited COVID-19 convalescent individuals who received one or two doses of an mRNA vaccine within 6 or around 18 months after a diagnosis of severe acute respiratory syndrome-coronavirus-2 (
Background: Despite the fact of ongoing worldwide vaccination programs for severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), understanding longevity, breadth, and type of immune response to coronavirus disease-19 (COVID-19) is still important to optimize the vaccination strategy and estimate the risk of reinfection. Therefore, we performed thorough immunological assessments 1 year post-COVID-19 with different severity. Methods: We analyzed peripheral blood mononuclear cells and plasm
BACKGROUND: Carbapenem is frequently used when gram negative bacilli (GNB) bacteremia is detected especially in neutropenic patients. Consequently, appropriate treatment could be delayed in GNB bacteremia cases involving organisms which are not susceptible to carbapenem (carba-NS), resulting in a poor clinical outcomes. Here, we explored risk factors for carba-NS GNB bacteremia and its clinical outcomes in patients with acute myelogenous leukemia (AML) that underwent chemotherapy. METHODS: We re
