About the Lab

Professor Chang-seon Kim's research lab focuses on translational biomedical and environmental microbiology research, with key interests in clinical emergency airway management, fungal ecology in agricultural systems, and bone metabolism in aging populations. The lab investigates factors influencing clinical outcomes in emergency intubation, explores Trichoderma species as biological competitors in shiitake mushroom cultivation, and examines the molecular and physiological effects of exercise and metabolic stress on bone health. These diverse research directions reflect a strong emphasis on integrating molecular biology, clinical data, and ecological interactions to address real-world health and agricultural challenges.

SJR Q1Emergency Medicine Journal

STUDY OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to determine the factors associated with successful endotracheal intubation (ETI) on the first-attempt in an emergency department. METHOD: We studied all of the ETI data at two urban emergency departments over a 5-year period. We assessed the intubator's specialty and training level, intubation method, device used, predicted airway difficulty and cause of ETIs. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression models were used to identify factors affecting the fir

SJR Q1The Plant Pathology JournalOA

During investigating of shiitake mushroom competitors, 289 isolates of Trichoderma spp. were collected from shiitake mushroom farms in different districts and the Forest Mushroom Research Center of Korea, among which 29 representative strains were selected. Based on the DNA sequences of the rpb2 and tef1 genes and the ITS rDNA, and their morphological characteristics, they were identified as T. atroviride, T. citrinoviride, T. harzianum, T. longibrachiatum, and two undescribed species, Trichoder

SJR Q1Journal of the American Medical Informatics AssociationOA

To examine the use of online social networking for cardiovascular care using Facebook. All posts and comments in a Facebook group between June 2011 and May 2012 were reviewed, and a survey was conducted. A total of 298 members participated. Of the 277 wall posts, 26.7% were question posts requesting rapid replies, and 50.5% were interesting cases shared with other members. The median response time for the question posts was 16 min (IQR 8-47), which tended to decrease as more members joined the g

SJR Q1The Plant Pathology JournalOA

Shiitake (Lentinula edodes) is the most economically important cultivated mushroom, but yields are impacted by its competitor, Trichoderma spp. We previously found two unidentified Trichoderma species growing in bedlogs and sawdust shiitake media in Korea. Here, we identify and re-describe those two species based on molecular sequence data, morphology, and culture characteristics. Well-supported clades based on phylogenetic analyses of internal transcribed spacer, translation elongation factor 1

SJR Q3Physical Activity and NutritionOA

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of a single bout pilates exercise on mRNA expression of bone metabolic cytokines in elderly osteopenia women. METHODS: We selected 11 people of elderly osteopenia women and loaded a single bout pilates exercise about RPE 10-14 level. The blood samples were collected before, immediately after and 60 minute after pilates exercise, then examined calcium metabolic markers in serum and extracted peripheral blood mononuclear cell (PBMC) from

Journal of PHYSIOLOGICAL ANTHROPOLOGY and Applied Human ScienceOA

To determine the effects of ammonium chloride (NH4Cl) dosage and swimming exercise training during 4 weeks on bone metabolic turnover in rats, seven-week-old female 24 Wister-Kyoto (WKY) rats were investigated by bone status including bone mineral density (BMD) and biomechanical markers from blood and urine. Twenty-four rats (initial weight: 191.2+/-7.6 g) were randomly divided into four groups: baseline (8 weeks old) control group (n=6, BC), 4-week control group (n=6, Con), 4-week swimming exer

SJR Q2Journal of Personalized MedicineOA

The hemolysis rate in the emergency department (ED) is higher compared to that in other departments. We propose a new blood sampling technique without repeated venipuncture to reduce hemolysis and compare the hemolysis rate between blood collected by this method and that collected with an intravenous (IV) catheter. This prospective study included a nonconsecutive sample of patients visiting the ED (aged ≥ 18 years) of a tertiary urban university hospital. The intravenous catheterization was perf

The aim of the present study was to determine the value of cumulative summation (CUSUM) analysis in assessing the proficiency of novice practitioners in estimating the left ventricular ejection fraction (EF).Seven novice practitioners with no echocardiography experience were recruited in this observational study. Each practitioner assessed EF from echocardiographic video files of 100 cases, one by one, and received feedback and teaching. We obtained a CUSUM score through comparison of the gold s
