About the Lab
Professor Cheol Min Lee's research lab focuses on the fundamental characterization of solid acid catalysts, particularly zeolites, using calorimetric techniques to understand structure-acidity relationships. The lab investigates the adsorption behavior and proton affinity correlations of basic molecules on zeolitic frameworks, contributing to the development of quantitative acidity scales. Additionally, the lab explores the societal and behavioral impacts of emerging tobacco products, such as heated tobacco and e-cigarettes, in South Korea, examining their influence on smoking cessation and public health policy. The research bridges materials science and public health, emphasizing both molecular-level insights and real-world behavioral trends.

15We have used microcalorimetry to measure the differential heats of adsorption of both a series of alkylamines and a series of substituted pyridines in H-ZSM-5 and H-Mordenite. With few exceptions, the differential heats are approximately constant to coverages close to the expected Brønsted site concentration. Both zeolites show good correlations between the average differential heats of adsorption and the gas-phase proton affinities of the basic adsorbates. Slopes of the correlation lines for th
Heated tobacco products (HTPs), a hybrid between conventional and electronic cigarettes, were first launched in South Korea in June 2017. Owing to advertisements stating that HTPs are odorless, tar-free, and less harmful to health, the sales of HTPs have grown quickly enough to account for about 10% of the total tobacco market in a year. HTP use by young, highly educated, and high-income groups had a significant impact on both the overall tobacco market over the past 3 years and the smoking and
E-cigarettes, heat-not-burn (HNB) tobacco, and other new types of tobacco products are emerging in Korea. These products are particularly popular among smokers who are looking for less harmful means of tobacco consumption, and are highly relevant for existing tobacco control policies. E-cigarettes, which are electronic devices designed to allow the user to inhale nicotine as a vapor, are controversial in terms of their safety and effects on smoking cessation, as a variety of harmful substances h
Since the advent of heated tobacco products in June 2017 in South Korea, the sale of heated tobacco products accounted for 10.5% of total tobacco sales in 2019. However, the decreasing trend in total tobacco sales is gradually weakening and the number of visitors using stop smoking services has also dropped. This study examines the association between the use of new tobacco products and related products and cessation behaviors. A cross-sectional study using a self-administered questionnaire was
Background: Although there has been a sharp increase in the use of heated tobacco products (HTPs) in Korea, its accuracy has not been verified. Methods: In total, 121 participants who used any type of tobacco [conventional cigarette (CC), electronic cigarettes (EC), and/or HTP] and completed an online survey in June 2019 were recruited. They were interviewed and classified into seven categories according to their combination. Results: Discordance between self-reported and interviewer-rated tobac
BACKGROUND: This study examined sociodemographic and tobacco-related factors of heated tobacco products (HTPs) use among adult ever smokers in South Korea where the sales of HTPs have been rapidly increasing since their launch in June 2017. METHODS: Before the launch of HTPs in Korea, participants comprised male ever smokers (234 current smokers and 37 quitters) who participated in the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey from 2015 to 2017 through one-to-one interview survey an
BACKGROUND: The association between abdominal visceral adipose tissue and the risk of incident chronic kidney disease according to body mass index in the Asian population, remains unclear. We evaluated the impact of abdominal adiposity stratified by body mass index on the risk of incident chronic kidney disease. METHODS: A cohort study included 11,050 adult participants who underwent health check-ups and re-evaluated the follow-up medical examination at a single university-affiliated healthcare
This document provides a description of country-level laws that regulate electronic cigarettes and heated tobacco products. The mechanisms used to regulate e-cigarettes were classified as either new/amended laws or existing laws. The policy domains identified include restrictions or prohibitions related to the product (sale, manufacturing, importation, distribution, use, product design including e-liquid ingredients, advertising/ promotion/ sponsorship, and trademarks) and regulatory requirement

BACKGROUND: Smoking cessation has been associated with reduced lung cancer mortality. This study aimed to synthesize current evidence on the impact of quitting smoking at or around the time of diagnosis of lung cancer on survival, considering factors such as histological subtype, cancer stage, and cessation intervention. METHODS: A systematic search was conducted in the Ovid-MEDLINE, Ovid-EMBASE, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, and KoreaMed databases up to September 2024. Randomi
