Professor Cheol-Sang Hwang's research lab specializes in the molecular mechanisms of protein degradation and post-translational modifications, with a central focus on the N-end rule pathway and its role in regulating cellular signaling, disease, and proteostasis. The lab investigates how N-terminal modifications—such as N-acetylation, N-terminal methylation, and arginylation—affect protein stability and function, particularly in human diseases like hypertension and Joubert syndrome. Using integrative approaches combining yeast genetics, mammalian cell models, and advanced mass spectrometry-based proteomics, the lab develops innovative methods for N-terminal proteome analysis, such as iNrich and the mass error test (MET), to enable precise profiling of N-terminal modifications.
