About the Lab

Professor Cheolmin Ahn's research lab specializes in critical care medicine and pulmonary diseases, with a focus on interventional pulmonology, acute respiratory failure, and rare forms of pulmonary hypertension such as chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension (CTEPH). The lab investigates pathophysiological mechanisms of lung injury, including elastase-mediated edema and inflammatory responses, and evaluates novel therapeutic interventions like synthetic elastase inhibitors. It also explores diagnostic strategies using medical imaging, such as chest CT for early detection of conditions like Birt-Hogg-Dubé (BHD) syndrome, and examines outcomes in patients with cardiogenic shock requiring advanced life support such as ECMO or CRRT.

Effect of a Synthetic Leukocyte Elastase Inhibitor on Thrombin-Induced Pulmonary Edema in the Rat
Chul‐Min Ahn, Håkan Sandler, Mitchell Glass, Tom Saldeen
SJR Q3Experimental Lung Research

The effect of a synthetic leukocyte elastase inhibitor on thrombin-induced pulmonary edema was studied in rats. The chloromethylketone human neutrophil elastase inhibitor, ICI 200,355, blunted rat leukocyte elastase activity in rat lung tissue. Administration of thrombin produced a significant increase (p < .01) in lung weight. The wet weight to dry weight ratio (WW/DW) and relative water contents were also significantly elevated (p < .01). Pretreatment with ICI 200,355 (200 micrograms/kg h-1) r

The participants showed no difference in their ability to correctly use a Swinghaler when compared with a Turbuhaler and preferred the Swinghaler. These results suggest that the Swinghaler may be an effective and valuable tool for the management of airway diseases.

Chronic Thromboembolic Pulmonary Hypertension: Endovascular Treatment
Chul‐Min Ahn, Hiromi Matsubara
SJR Q2Korean Circulation JournalOA

Chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension (CTEPH) is a rare cause of pulmonary hypertension; less than 5% of pulmonary hypertension is caused by recurrent pulmonary thromboembolism (PTE). By definition, CTEPH happens within the first two years after symptomatic PTE; however, cases are often diagnosed without a history of acute PTE. Because of the poor functional status and chronicity of this disease, the classic and curative strategy of open pulmonary endarterectomy cannot be applied in some

Background: Cardiogenic shock (CS) frequently leads to multiorgan failure, often necessitating continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT) or extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO). We evaluated the association between CRRT, ECMO, and its prognostic implication in patients with CS. Methods: A total of 1247 patients with CS were enrolled from the RESCUE (Retrospective and Prospective Observational Study to Investigate Clinical Outcomes and Efficacy of Left Ventricular Assist Device for Korean

SJR Q2Tuberculosis and Respiratory Diseases

Neurilemmoma is rare benign tumor originating from the Schwann cell of the nerve sheath. Intrabronchial neurilemmoma are extremely rare and only few cases have been reported previously in Korea. Neurilemmoma at all ages but are most common in persons between the ages of 20 and 50 years. It affects the head, neck, flexor regions of the extremities. Neurilemmoma was confirmed histologically because of the presence of Verocay bodies, Antoni A or B tissue pattern and of S-100 protein. We report two

Background The IVUS‐DCB (Intravascular Ultrasound‐Guided Drug‐Coated Balloon Angioplasty for Femoropopliteal Artery Disease) trial found that intravascular ultrasound (IVUS)–guided drug‐coated balloon (DCB) angioplasty was associated with superior 12‐month outcomes, compared with conventional angiography‐guided DCB angioplasty. However, the durability of these benefits remains uncertain. The aim of this study was to compare the 24‐month outcomes of IVUS‐guided versus angiography‐guided DCB angio

Drug rash with eosinophilia and systemic symptoms (DRESS) syndrome, a kind of hypersensitivity syndrome, is a life-threatening condition with various clinical manifestations such as fever, skin rash, lymph node enlargement andinternal organ involvement. We report a case of skin rash and eosinophilia followed by acute renal failure and mild hepatitis after cephalosporin administration.
