About the Lab
Professor Chi Young Kim's research lab focuses on respiratory and metabolic diseases, with a strong emphasis on understanding the interplay between host factors, environmental exposures, and disease progression. Key research directions include the epidemiology and pathogenesis of non-tuberculous mycobacterial pulmonary disease (NTM-PD), the tumor microenvironment in lung cancer based on smoking status, and the impact of socioeconomic factors on chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). The lab also investigates metabolic syndrome, gout in tuberculosis patients, and pulmonary hypertension in the context of lung transplantation, integrating clinical data with molecular and immunological analyses.

15The incidence rate of NTM-PD in a tertiary referral hospital in South Korea continued to increase from 2006 to 2016. Furthermore, there were age- and sex-related differences in the clinical characteristics, which might contribute to understanding the nature of the disease and inherited and acquired host factors.

In the general population, educational level of elementary school was an independent risk factor for COPD among the components comprising SES. Our results indicate that the implementation of preventive strategies for COPD in those with low educational status could be beneficial.

Concurrent use of GASs with EGFR-TKIs is linked to poorer OS and PFS in patients with advanced NSCLC. This study indicates an association between e-cigarette use and individual factors, including sex, age, education level, and income level. Electronic cigarette use, including dual use, is associated with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Additionally, anxiety and depression were highest among dual users, followed by those among conventional cigarette users.
