About the Lab

Professor Cho Seong-kwan's research lab specializes in sport and exercise psychology, with a primary focus on athlete well-being, psychological stress, and performance optimization. The lab investigates key factors such as coach-athlete relationships, competitive anxiety, burnout, and physiological indicators like heart rate variability in relation to athletic flow and performance. Using mixed-methods and advanced statistical modeling, including structural equation modeling and multi-group analysis, the lab emphasizes the validation of psychological assessment tools and their cross-group applicability, particularly in Korean collegiate athletes. The research also explores the interplay between psychological needs—competence, autonomy, and relatedness—and mental health outcomes in sports contexts.

A comparative study of construct equivalence and latent means analysis of athlete burnout questionnaire for adolescent athletes
hunhyuk choi, Robert C. Eklund, Seongkwan Cho

The Method of Action Analysis and the North Korean Realism Theatre in the 1960s
Hong Jaebeom, Seongkwan Cho
SJR Q2Asian Theatre Journal

A debate about Method of Action Analysis (MAA), derived from the Stanislavski System split older actors and newly trained DPRK theatre artists in the early 1960s. The conflict arose around memorizing lines, which had previously been done during table work. Using the art journal Joseon-yesul (Korean Art) published by the government, two generations debated acting. Eventually MAA was established at the instruction of Kim Il-sung, who stated that all artists must undertake participant observation f

Talent Development and Motivation in Dancers

Theatre Censorship in South Korea: a Nation in Permanent Crisis
Seongkwan Cho
SJR Q2New Theatre Quarterly

Between 1975 and 1988, the Korean Public Performance Ethics Committee (KPPEC) censored obscene language, body exposure, and extreme violence, as is common in all forms of theatre censorship. However, the KPPEC focused in particular on depictions of the President of South Korea, and proscribed any work that challenged or even questioned the public image of the President as a strong leader for a nation in crisis. Despite the official abolition of censorship in 1988, it was discovered in 2016 that

A Hero of the Two Koreas: Yi Sun-shin Dramatized in North and South
Seongkwan Cho, Jae-beom Hong
SJR Q2New Theatre Quarterly

Yi Sun-shin (1545–98), an admiral of the Joseon dynasty, is a Korean national hero who is admired by both North and South Korea regardless of political ideology. Yet between 1960 and 1970 North and South Korea presented Yi from different perspectives in accordance with their own political interests. In South Korea, Yi was portrayed as a solitary hero who sacrificed himself to save the country despite the blame and entrapment he suffered as a result. Alongside, North Korea presented Yi as an idea
