About the Lab

Professor Chul-In Lee's research lab specializes in labor economics, intergenerational income mobility, and public finance, with a strong focus on empirical macroeconomics and policy evaluation. The lab investigates time-series trends in income mobility using high-quality longitudinal data, corrects for finite-sample biases in econometric estimation—particularly in instrumental variable models—and evaluates the effectiveness of labor market and employment subsidy programs. It also engages in macroeconomic modeling of sovereign debt dynamics and financial crises, especially in the context of monetary unions and peripheral economies.

Trends in Intergenerational Income Mobility
Chul‐In Lee, Gary Solon
National Bureau of Economic ResearchOA

Previous studies of recent U.S. trends in intergenerational income mobility have produced widely varying results, partly because of large sampling errors. By making more efficient use of the available information in the Panel Study of Income Dynamics, we generate more reliable estimates of the recent time-series variation in intergenerational mobility. Our results, which pertain to the cohorts born between 1952 and 1975, do not reveal major changes in intergenerational mobility.

Finite Sample Bias in IV Estimation of Intertemporal Labor Supply Models: Is the Intertemporal Substitution Elasticity Really Small?
Chul‐In Lee
SJR Q1The Review of Economics and Statistics

The empirical literature on intertemporal labor supply behavior documents that the intertemporal elasticity of substitution of labor supply is very low, with a plausible range of zero to 0.2. Drawing upon the literature on the distribution of instrumental variables (IV) estimators, this paper demonstrates that this conventional wisdom is erroneous because it does not take into account the severe finite sample bias in these estimates that arise from weak instruments. This paper adopts several app

SOVEREIGN DEBT CRISIS IN A MONETARY UNION: ACCOUNTING FOR EXCESSIVE DEBT, HOUSING BUBBLES, AND THE TRANSMISSION OF CRISES
Yong Jin Kim, Chul‐In Lee
SJR Q1Economic Inquiry

Despite vast empirical documentation of the recent sovereign debt crisis in southern Europe, there is little research accounting for the following stylized facts in a single coherent framework: continuous borrowing, high growth, housing bubbles, and current account deficits since the beginning of the European Monetary Union ending with a sudden crisis and subsequent contagion of crisis. We fill this gap by proposing a model and fitting it to the data. Using a growth model with collateral constra

CAN SEARCH-MATCHING MODELS EXPLAIN MIGRATION AND WAGE AND UNEMPLOYMENT GAPS IN DEVELOPING ECONOMIES? A CALIBRATION APPROACH*
Chul‐In Lee
SJR Q1Journal of Regional Science

ABSTRACT A recent theoretical literature tries to understand the migration pattern in developing economies through the lens of search-matching (SM) models, but there has been little empirical support for these models. This paper tries to fill this gap by examining whether the models are consistent with the data from developing economies. Combined with some suggestive statistics, our calibration exercise reveals that when augmented with additional frictions (fixed costs of starting up new busines
