About the Lab
Professor Chung-won Jung's research lab specializes in ancient human population history, with a focus on reconstructing genetic lineages and migration patterns across East Asia, Inner Asia, and North Africa using high-coverage paleogenomic data. The lab investigates the origins and transformations of early farming and pastoralist societies, particularly in regions such as northern China, the Mongolian steppe, and the Himalayan arc, integrating archaeology, linguistics, and population genomics. A central theme is understanding how environmental adaptation, cultural change, and gene flow shaped human diversity in challenging highland and steppe environments.

15Northern China harbored the world's earliest complex societies based on millet farming, in two major centers in the Yellow (YR) and West Liao (WLR) River basins. The Eastern Eurasian Steppe was home to historic empires of nomadic pastoralists, including the Xiongnu and the Mongols. However, little is known about the region's population history. North Africa is a key region for understanding human history, but the genetic history of its people is largely unknown.
