About the Lab
Professor Do Young Park's research lab focuses on the pathophysiology of ocular diseases, particularly diabetic retinopathy and neovascular age-related macular degeneration, with a strong emphasis on the role of vascular and inflammatory mechanisms in the retina and choroid. The lab investigates the blood-retinal barrier, pericyte function, and vascular permeability, while also exploring the gut-eye axis through probiotic interventions that modulate systemic metabolism and ocular health. Additionally, the lab examines the role of cytokines and oxidative stress in glaucoma and explores clinical applications in intraocular lens calculations and imaging biomarkers in retinal disorders.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the functional effects of probiotic treatment on the gut microbiota, as well as liver and adipose gene expression in diet-induced obese mice. DESIGN: Male C57BL/6J mice were fed a high-fat diet (HFD) for 8 weeks to induce obesity, and then randomized to receive HFD+probiotic (Lactobacillus curvatus HY7601 and Lactobacillus plantarum KY1032, n = 9) or HFD+placebo (n = 9) for another 10 weeks. Probiotic L. curvatus HY7601 and L. plantarum KY1032 combined suppressed the clinical characteristics of high-fructose-induced metabolic syndrome, therefore, may provide a natural alternative for the treatment of diet-induced metabolic syndrome.
This study demonstrates that engorgement of the vortex vein was observed more frequently in the eyes with PCV. Such a finding was associated with choroidal thickening and choroidal vascular hyperpermeability. These indicate that the engorgement of the vortex vein might be involved in the pathogenic mechanisms of PCV.
