About the Lab

Professor Dong Soo Han's research lab specializes in gastrointestinal mucosal immunology, host-microbe interactions, and the pathogenesis of gastrointestinal diseases, with a focus on gastric and intestinal carcinogenesis. The lab investigates the role of specific microbial communities—particularly *Helicobacter pylori* and adherent-invasive *E. coli*—in chronic inflammation and cancer development, as well as the therapeutic potential of growth factors like KGF-2 in mucosal repair. They also explore novel endoscopic screening tools and bowel preparation protocols to improve diagnostic accuracy and patient compliance in colorectal cancer screening.

BACKGROUND: Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection plays an important role in the early stage of cancer development. However, various bacteria that promote the synthesis of reactive oxygen and nitrogen species may be involved in the later stages. We aimed to determine the microbial composition of gastric mucosa from the patients with chronic gastritis, intestinal metaplasia, and gastric cancer using 454 GS FLX Titanium. METHODS: Gastric mucosal biopsy samples were collected from 31 patients d

SJR Q1CarcinogenesisOA

A close relationship between inflammation and colon cancer has been widely accepted, and interleukin (IL)-17A plays an important role in controlling colonic inflammation. However, the role of IL-17A has not yet been validated in colitis-associated cancer (CAC). This study aims to identify the effects of IL-17A in tumorigenesis utilizing IL-17A-deficient mice in an experimental CAC model. CAC was induced in both the IL-17A-deficient and the C57BL/6 (wild-type, WT) mice by injection of 12.5 mg/kg

Lactobacillus casei prevents impaired barrier function in intestinal epithelial cells
Chang Soo Eun, Yong Seok Kim, Dong Soo Han, Joo Hyun Choi, A REUM LEE, Yoon Kyung Park
SJR Q1Apmis

The exact effect of probiotics on epithelial barrier function is not well understood. The aims of this study were to evaluate cytokine-induced epithelial barrier dysfunction in intestinal epithelial cells (IECs) and to study the role of probiotics in the prevention of epithelial barrier dysfunction. Caco-2 cells grown on transwell chambers were stimulated with tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α or interferon (IFN)-γ basolaterally. Probiotic, Lactobacillus casei, was added 1 h before cytokine stimulat

SJR Q1HelicobacterOA

BACKGROUND: Despite recent advances in studies on the gastric microbiome, the role of the non-Helicobacter pylori gastric microbiome in gastric carcinogenesis remains unclear. We evaluated the characteristics of the gastric microbiome and metagenomic functions in patients with IM. METHODS: Participants were classified into six groups according to disease status (chronic superficial gastritis [CSG], intestinal metaplasia [IM], and cancer) and H. pylori- infection status (H. pylori-positive and H.

Keratinocyte growth factor-2 (FGF-10) promotes healing of experimental small intestinal ulceration in rats

SJR Q1American Journal of Physiology-Gastrointestinal and Liver Physiology

Keratinocyte growth factor-2 (KGF-2, repifermin) is a homolog of KGF-1 with epithelial mitogenic activities. We investigated the therapeutic role of KGF-2 in intestinal ulceration and its mechanisms of protection. KGF-2 (0.3-5 mg/kg) was administered before or after induction of small intestinal ulceration by indomethacin (Indo) in prevention and treatment protocols. In acute studies, KGF-2 was injected for up to 7 days before or daily for 5 days after Indo. In a 15-day chronic study, KGF-2 was

SJR Q1Journal of Gastroenterology and HepatologyOA

BACKGROUND AND STUDY AIMS: A prepackaged low residue one-day diet (breakfast, lunch and dinner) has been recently developed to improve patient tolerance for bowel preparation prior to colonoscopy. The aims of this study were to evaluate the efficacy and tolerability of bowel preparation protocols based on a low residue diet and 4L polyethylene glycol (PEG) solution, and to compare these new options with the traditional liquid diet and the PEG 4L lavage. METHODS: A total of 214 patients (mean age

Role of Fusobacteria in the serrated pathway of colorectal carcinogenesis
Chan Hyuk Park, Dong Soo Han, Young‐Ha Oh, A-reum Lee, Yu-ra Lee, Chang Soo Eun
SJR Q1Scientific ReportsOA

Fusobacteria are associated with colorectal cancer (CRC) and are amplified during colorectal carcinogenesis. Compared to the adenoma-carcinoma sequence of carcinogenesis, serrated neoplasm has distinct clinical features and a different molecular background. We aimed to compare the gut microbiome between tubular adenoma (TA) and sessile serrated adenoma/polyp (SSA/P). Patients with TA, SSA/P, or CRC were recruited. Three pieces of colorectal mucosal tissue were obtained from each patient by endos

SJR Q1PLoS ONEOA

Adherent-invasive Escherichia coli (AIEC) has been reported as associated with the pathogenesis of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). We aimed to investigate the characteristics of mucosa-associated E. coli and the clinical significance of AIEC in Korean IBD patients. E. coli strains were isolated from the mucosal tissues of 18 Crohn's disease (CD) patients, 24 ulcerative colitis (UC) patients, and 9 healthy controls (HC). Adhesion, invasion, and survival assays were performed to evaluate phenoty
